Tectonics of the Eastern Continental Margin of India

Tectonics of the Eastern Continental Margin of India PDF Author: Dr. K. S. R. Murthy
Publisher: The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)
ISBN: 817993408X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
Passive continental margins are formed within a single lithospheric plate in which the continental crust adjoins the oceanic crust. Assessment of the geological potential of these margins requires a comprehensive knowledge on the history of the ocean—from the time of pre-rifting events to the present. Tectonics of the Eastern Continental Margin of India presents the different aspects of a passive margin such as its evolution, tectonics, and associated hazards, taking the Eastern Continental Margin of India (ECMI) as a case study. It discusses the passive margin and focuses on its origin, morphology, structure, and exploration potential; describes the major structural lineaments delineated from the geophysical data over the ECMI; and attempts to explain the geodynamic evolution of this passive margin. A preliminary estimate on the seismic hazards associated with ECMI is also presented in the book.

From Rodinia to Pangea

Book Description
"The Appalachians constitute one of Earth's major tectonic features and have served as a springboard for innovative geologic thought for more than 170 years. This volume contains 36 original papers reporting the results of research performed throughout nearly the entire length and breadth of the Appalachian region, including all major provinces and geographical areas. Memoir 206 was designed to commemorate the (near-)fortieth anniversary of the publication of the classic Studies of Appalachian Geology volumes that appeared just prior to the application of plate tectonic concepts to the region. Contributions concerning structural evolution, sedimentation, stratigraphy, magmatic processes, metamorphism, tectonics, and terrane accretion illustrate the wide range of ongoing research in the area and collectively serve to mark the considerable progress in scientific thought that has occurred during the past four decades."--pub. desc.

The Geology of Continental Margins

The Geology of Continental Margins PDF Author: C.A. Burk
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3662011417
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 976

Book Description
The continental margins of the world constitute the most impressive and largest physiographic feature of the earth's surface, and one of fundamentally great geological significance. Continental margins have been the subject of increasing attention in recent years, an interest focused by a body of new data that has provided new insights into their character. This interest was further stimulated by the realization that, in addition to the abundant living resources, continental margins contain petroleum and mineral resources that are accessible with existing technology. This realization, along with their basic geological importance, has provoked further research into the nature of continental margins throughout the world. A summary of these findings, as related to both recent and ancient continental margins, is the subject of this book. At various times in the past we had been approached individually to prepare a basic reference to continental margins; we then proposed to do such a volume jointly. However, the stimulus for the present volume eventually arose from a Penrose Conference arranged through the Geological Society of America. This conference was attended by specialists of numerous disciplines and from throughout the world, many of whom insisted that such a volume would be both timely and useful. Consequently, we agreed to undertake the task of assembling this book, with the objectives of making it available as soon and as inexpensively as possible.

Tectonic Development of the Eastern Mediterranean Region

Tectonic Development of the Eastern Mediterranean Region PDF Author: A. H. F. Robertson
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 9781862391987
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 736

Book Description
The Eastern Mediterranean region is a classic area for the study of tectonic processes and settings related to the development of the Tethyan orogenic belt. The present set of research and synthesis papers by earth scientists from countries in this region and others provides an up-to-date, interdisciplinary overview of the tectonic development of the Eastern Mediterranean region from Precambrian to Recent. Key topics include continental rifting, ophiolite genesis and emplacement, continental collision, extensional tectonics, crustal exhumation and intra-plate deformation (e.g. active faulting). Alternative tectonic reconstructions of the Tethyan orogen are presented and discussed, with important implications for other regions of the world. The book will be an essential source of information and interpretation for academic researchers (geologists and geophysicists), advanced undergraduates and also for industry professionals, including those concerned with hydrocarbons, minerals and geological hazards (e.g. earthquakes).
