Excerpt from The New Jerusalem, and Its Heavenly Doctrine: From Things Heard Out of Heaven; To Which Is Prefixed Something Concerning the New Heaven and the New Earth Concerning the New Heaven and the New Earth, and What is Meant by the New Jerusalem. It is said in the Apocalypse, "I saw a New Heaven and a New Earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. And I saw the Holy City, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a Bride adorned for her Husband. And the city had a wall great and high, which had twelve gates; and on the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, in which were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And the city itself lay four-square, whose length was as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with a reed, twelve thousand furlongs; and the length and the breadth and the height of it were equal. Book Description
Excerpt from The Doctrine of the New Jerusalem Concerning the Sacred Scripture I. IT is on every one's lips that the Word is from God, is Divinely inspired, and consequently holy; but still it has not hitherto been known where, in the Word, the Divine is. For in the letter the Word appears like an ordinary writing, in a foreign style, neither sublime nor lucid, as the writings of the present age apparently are. Owing to this, a person who worships nature instead of God, or more than God, and who therefore thinks from himself and his proprz'um, and not from heaven and from the Lord, may easily fall into error respecting the Word, and into contempt for it, saying within himself when he is reading it, What is this? What is that? Is this Divine? Can God Who has infinite wisdom Speak so Where is its holiness? And whence, unless from some religious system, and persuasion from it? Book Description
Excerpt from The New Jerusalem and Its Heavenly Doctrine: As Revealed From Heaven; Translated From the Latin Doctrine not only teaches this, but innumerable things beside, of which not a thousandth part is known at this day. The whole sacred scripture is nothing else than the doctrine of love and charity, which the Lord also teaches, saying, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God from thy whole heart, and in thy whole soul, and in thy whole mind; this is the primary and great commandment; the second is like unto it; thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Book Description
Excerpt from The New Jerusalem and Its Heavenly Doctrine: According to What Has Been Heard From Heaven With an Introduction Concerning the New Heaven and the New Earth Heavens constitute higher expanses, but the New Heaven an expanse beneath them; for the heavens are expanses, one above another. In the highest expanses are those who are called celestial angels, most of whom are from the Most Ancient Church: those who are there are called celestial angels from celestial love, which is love to the Lord. In the expanses beneath them are those who are called spiritual angels, most of whom are from the Ancient Church: those who are there are called spiritual angels from spiritual love, which is charity towards the neighbour. Below these are the angels who are in the good of faith: they are those who have lived a life of faith: to live a life of faith, is to live according to the doctrine of one's Church; andliving means willing and doing. Still, all these heavens make one, through mediate and immediate influx from the Lord. But a fuller idea of these heavens may be had from what has been shewn in the work on Heaven and Hell, and particularly in the chapter concerning the two Kingdoms into which the heavens are in general divided, no. 20 to no. 28; and in the chapter concerning the three heavens, no. 29 to no. 40: concerning mediate and immediate influx, in the extracts from the Heavenly Arcana, after no. 603; and con cerning the Most Ancient and Ancient Churches, in the small work on The Last Judgment and the Destruction of Babylon. Book Description
Excerpt from The Heavenly Doctrine of the Lord When, therefore, we have learned what any system Of theology teaches concerning the supreme Object of worship, we have mastered the central idea or doctrine Of that system; and from this we may draw a pretty just conclusion in regard to all the rest. For when the central doctrine is wrong, the others growing out of it, adjusted to it, modified and colored by it, cannot be right; and when this is right, the others cannot be very far wrong.
