Book Description
Excerpt from The Doctrine of Endless Punishment AT the request of the editor of the North American Review, the author of this book prepared an argument in defence of the doctrine of Endless Punishment, which was published in the number of that periodical for February, 1885. It was agreed that the writer should have the right to republish it at a future time. Only the rational argument was presented in the article. The author now reproduces it, adding the Biblical argument, and a brief historical sketch. Every doctrine has its day to be attacked, and defended. Just now, that of Eternal Retribution is strenuously com bated, not only outside of the church, but to some extent within it. Whoever preaches it is said, by some, not to preach to the times - as if the sin of this time were privileged, and stood in a different relation to the law and judgment of God, from that of other times. Book Description
Excerpt from The Origin and History of the Doctrine of Endless Punishment The sale of the first edition of nearly two thou sand copies in the space of three or four months, without being advertised in any form, has encour aged me to believe that the work meets an act ual want, and will be serviceable to the cause of Truth. In the preparation of the present edition, therefore, I have made considerable additions; and, I trust, improvements also, in the hope of making it more worthy and more useful. Two chapters and two sections entire have been ad ded, and chapters three, four and six, have been greatly enlarged, and the argument illus trated and fortified by new facts and authorities. Book Description
Excerpt from Objections to the Doctrine of Endless Punishment The history of endless punishment is one of bloodshed, cruelty and crime. Heathenish in its ori gin, unsupported in its claims by reason, philosophy, and revelation, by the friendly aid of bigotry and superstition, it has worked its way down to the present day. This system has undergone various modifications with a view to make it acceptable to the people of different ages. Chameleon like, it changes its color as often as circumstances require. The wolf dressed in a lamb-skin is a wolf still. So of the svstem of endless punishment; when stripped of the transparent gauze in which its ad vocates strive to hide its deformities, it is the hydra headed monster, full of wrath and cruelty.
