Divine Music in Archaic and Classical Greek Art

Divine Music in Archaic and Classical Greek Art PDF Author: Carolyn Laferrière
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1009315935
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 303

Book Description
In this volume, Carolyn M. Laferrière examines Athenian vase-paintings and reliefs depicting the gods most frequently shown as musicians to reconstruct how images suggest the sounds of the music the gods made. Incorporating insights from recent work in sensory studies, she applies formal analysis together with literary and archaeological evidence to reconstruct the musical culture of Athens. Laferrière shows how images suggest the sounds of the gods' music. This representational strategy, whereby sight and sound are blurred, conveys the 'unhearable' nature of their music: Because it cannot be physically heard, it falls to human imagination to provide its sounds and awaken viewers' multisensory engagement. Moreover, when situated within their likely original contexts, the objects establish a network of interaction between the viewer, the visualized music, and the landscape, all of which determined how divine music was depicted, perceived, and reciprocated. Laferrière demonstrates that participation in the gods' musical performances offered worshippers an multisensory experience of divine presence.

The Divine Symphony

The Divine Symphony PDF Author: David L. Gray
Publisher: Saint Dominic's Media, Inc.
ISBN: 1732178429
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
The Divine Symphony begins with this one presupposition; that all that God has revealed about Himself, and all that He yearns for His People to be, is offered through the Catholic Mass. The exposition of that presupposition resulted in this unique book on the Theology of the Catholic Mass. The Divine Symphony presents a wonderful and seamless presentation of the liturgical continuity of the history, meaning, and mystery of the central and highest expression of worship and prayer in the Catholic Church. For the past century and longer, nearly every book written by Catholics about the Catholic Mass has taken to the approach to explain the liturgy by dissecting it into separate parts and pieces. Contrary to this staunchly popular style of teaching, the Catholic Mass is not a disjointed litany of things laity says, things the Priest says, times they stand, times they kneel, things they do, and things they don’t do. Rather, in all of its liturgical expressions, from East to West, the Catholic Mass is a singular and Divinely inspired composition; a familial song of prayers and confessions. It truly is a Divine Symphony called the ‘Ite, Missa est.’ This is what makes David L. Gray’s work groundbreaking, in that finally there comes along a book that presents a harmonious symphony of the Catholic Mass. Although Mr. Gray uses the Novus Ordo rite as the outline to narrate and guide the reader through the liturgical movements, he also draws into text much older Latin and Eastern rites, for the objectives of deeper study and explanation of the purpose, meaning, mystery, and orientation of the sacred liturgy. Such incorporation of so many various rites demonstrates, most beautifully, the universality and continuity of Christ Jesus’ memorial sacrifice. A second unique feature of this work is Mr. Gray’s use of the classical symphony orchestra as a way to explain the structure and flow of the Catholic Mass. Even if the reader is not trained in the classical works, Gray gives them enough history and examples to give the reader a good reason to appreciate and understand their many similarities of form and purpose. A third unique aspect of the book is that rather than attempt to explain the Mass through Scriptural proof-texts, the author has rightly moved to explain the Scriptures through the Mass. For, as the Scriptures tells the story of salvation history, it is the Mass, which brings the promise of the story to their fulfillment. Through beautiful prose and a concrete presentation of the Divine Symphony’s history, meaning, mystery, and liturgical continuity, David L. Gray, in this exordium, gives reason to all to know, love and pray the Mass. This well written and accessible a book is not only for Catholics, but for anyone who is looking to developing a deeper understanding and appreciation for what the Priests, Deacons, and the People are doing when they pray and confess the Ite, Missa Est. To know the Mass is to love it and to love it is to pray it.

Leaps of Faith

Leaps of Faith PDF Author: Robert J. Dean

ISBN: 1532604130
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 219

Book Description
If you are passionate about participating in the recovery of preaching for the spiritual formation of God's people, then you will want to jump into this lively collection of biblically rigorous, culturally intuitive, grace-drenched sermons. Robert Dean sets the bar very high, even as he throws the gauntlet down, with these remarkable expressions of all that preaching was supposed to be and can still become. Animated by the conviction that the preached word is the playground of the Living Word, the pages of Leaps of Faith are populated by saints and sinners, pimps and prophets. Unexpectedly and delightfully, Bono works alongside Bonhoeffer, Dr. Phil learns a lesson from the Amish, and a discussion of body odor primes the senses for contemplating the mission of God. Rooted deeply in the lives of actual worshipping communities, these wonder-laden sermons from the prophetic imagination of an emerging pastor-theologian dare the reader to leap into the continuing story of the Triune God and, in doing so, discover that all of life has been taken up in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Book Description
In the sacred town of Vrindavan, where the air hums with divine melodies and the Yamuna flows with the grace of celestial rhythms, the legend of Lord Krishna, the Blue Prince, thrives in the hearts of His devotees. This book is a humble offering from Sudama, Krishna’s childhood friend and steadfast devotee, whose life was profoundly touched by the benevolence and divine play of the Lord. Hypothetically, as Janmashtami approaches this August, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, Sudama, present this collection of letters as a token of his eternal gratitude and love for his dearest friend. These letters are more than just words on parchment; they are the echoes of Sudama’s heart, filled with the myriad emotions and bhavas that Krishna has inspired within him throughout their journey together. In their youth, Krishna and Sudama shared the pure, unblemished bond of friendship in the serene environs of gurukul. Those days were marked by simplicity and joy, where they learned, played, and shared meals, oblivious to the vast destinies that awaited them. Krishna’s laughter was like the chime of temple bells, and His wisdom was a guiding light even then. Years later, when Sudama found himself in dire poverty, it was Krishna’s boundless compassion that transformed his life. With a heart as vast as the cosmos, He welcomed him into His palace, not as a poor Brahmin seeking alms, but as a dear friend in need. The Lord’s grace not only filled his household with wealth but also enriched his soul with the divine nectar of love. Each letter in this collection encapsulates a facet of gratitude and devotion. They recount the days in the gurukul, the simple joys of shared meals, and the overwhelming grace that Krishna bestowed upon his family. Through these letters, I have tried to convey the profound impact of His divine play (leela) on Sudama’s life and the myriad emotions it has evoked within. This book is not merely a compilation of words; it is a heartfelt tribute to the divine friendship that transcends the mundane bounds of this world. It is my hope that as you read these letters, you too will feel the divine presence of Krishna, the Blue Prince of Vrindavan, and be inspired by the boundless love and compassion that He embodies. With utmost reverence and devotion, Sudama offer this humble gift to his beloved Krishna on the auspicious occasion of His birthday, Janmashtami. May these letters serve as a testament to the eternal bond of friendship and the divine grace that He showers upon us all.
