Book Description
Great leaders come by from time to time. We see them in every walk of life inspiring others with their amazing example of humanity, courage, resolve and heroism. At times they appear to come out of nowhere, arriving on the scene just when they are needed most as a beacon of light, of hope. Inspiring leaders are compelled with optimism. They are knocked down, arrested, beaten, shot, shamed and told to stop. Yet faced with what others would consider insurmountable challenges, these individuals choose not to simply speak, write, protest or fight, but to live the whole of their lives for a cause. ?Inspiration comes not from people alone. Inspiration is looking around and realizing we don't know everything about what is here much less what is out there. Inspiration stares back at you when gazing at the night sky in all of its glory. Inspiration is what drives people to work together in order to solve the great challenges our planet presents us. Inspiration is and forever will be something deeply personal that resonates with the emotions serving as a constant reminder that even though we are human, we can achieve the inhuman if we sufficiently commit ourselves.

Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 611

Book Description
This fully revised and updated second edition is an essential introduction to inferential statistics. It is the first introductory statistics text to use an estimation approach from the start and also to explain the new and exciting Open Science practices, which encourage replication and enhance the trustworthiness of research. The estimation approach, with meta-analysis (“the new statistics”), is exactly what’s needed for Open Science. Key features of this new edition include: Even greater prominence for Open Science throughout the book. Students easily understand basic Open Science practices and are guided to use them in their own work. There is discussion of the latest developments now being widely adopted across science and medicine. Integration of new open-source esci (Estimation Statistics with Confidence Intervals) software, running in jamovi. This is ideal for the book and extends seamlessly to what’s required for more advanced courses, and also by researchers. See www.thenewstatistics.com/itns/esci/jesci/. Colorful interactive simulations, including the famous dances, to help make key statistical ideas intuitive. These are now freely available through any browser. See www.esci.thenewstatistics.com/. Coverage of both estimation and null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) approaches, with full guidance on how to translate between the two. Effective learning strategies and pedagogical features to promote critical thinking, comprehension and retention Designed for introduction to statistics, data analysis, or quantitative methods courses in psychology, education, and other social and health sciences, researchers interested in understanding Open Science and the new statistics will also appreciate this book. Effects of Explosions on Materials

Effects of Explosions on Materials PDF Author: Stepan S. Batsanov
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1475739699
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
In the 1950s explosives began to be used to generate ultrahigh pressures in condensed substances in order to modify their properties and structure. Notwithstanding the short duration of an explosion, its energy proved to be high enough to perform physical-chemical transformations of substances, and the new method gained wide industrial applications. It has both advan tages and drawbacks in comparison with the traditional method of static compression. The latter method, notorious for its cumbersome and expensive machin ery, allows one to maintain high pressure as long as one pleases and to regu late the temperature of the sample arbitrarily. But, the pressure available is rather limited and for any increase of this limit one has to pay by the progres sive shrinking of the working volume of a press. The dynamic method has the advantages of low cost and practically no restrictions of magnitude of pressure and the size of a processed sample, but the temperature in a compressed body is no longer controlled by an experi mentor. Rather, it is firmly dictated by the level of loading, according to the equation of state. Hence, it is difficult to recover metastable products and impossible to prepare solids with a low concentration of defects as the dura tion of explosion is too short for their elimination.

Introduction to Meta-Analysis

Introduction to Meta-Analysis PDF Author: Michael Borenstein
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119964377
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 350

Book Description
This book provides a clear and thorough introduction to meta-analysis, the process of synthesizing data from a series of separate studies. Meta-analysis has become a critically important tool in fields as diverse as medicine, pharmacology, epidemiology, education, psychology, business, and ecology. Introduction to Meta-Analysis: Outlines the role of meta-analysis in the research process Shows how to compute effects sizes and treatment effects Explains the fixed-effect and random-effects models for synthesizing data Demonstrates how to assess and interpret variation in effect size across studies Clarifies concepts using text and figures, followed by formulas and examples Explains how to avoid common mistakes in meta-analysis Discusses controversies in meta-analysis Features a web site with additional material and exercises A superb combination of lucid prose and informative graphics, written by four of the world’s leading experts on all aspects of meta-analysis. Borenstein, Hedges, Higgins, and Rothstein provide a refreshing departure from cookbook approaches with their clear explanations of the what and why of meta-analysis. The book is ideal as a course textbook or for self-study. My students, who used pre-publication versions of some of the chapters, raved about the clarity of the explanations and examples. David Rindskopf, Distinguished Professor of Educational Psychology, City University of New York, Graduate School and University Center, & Editor of the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics. The approach taken by Introduction to Meta-analysis is intended to be primarily conceptual, and it is amazingly successful at achieving that goal. The reader can comfortably skip the formulas and still understand their application and underlying motivation. For the more statistically sophisticated reader, the relevant formulas and worked examples provide a superb practical guide to performing a meta-analysis. The book provides an eclectic mix of examples from education, social science, biomedical studies, and even ecology. For anyone considering leading a course in meta-analysis, or pursuing self-directed study, Introduction to Meta-analysis would be a clear first choice. Jesse A. Berlin, ScD Introduction to Meta-Analysis is an excellent resource for novices and experts alike. The book provides a clear and comprehensive presentation of all basic and most advanced approaches to meta-analysis. This book will be referenced for decades. Michael A. McDaniel, Professor of Human Resources and Organizational Behavior, Virginia Commonwealth University
