Book Description
Excerpt from The Development of Taste, and Other Studies in Aesthetics It is nearly twenty years now since I received my first stimulus to Studies in Aesthetics, and it was received from lectures given, and essays prescribed, by Professor Edward Caird, of Glasgow University, in session 1866-67. Early in the session we had as subject of essay, "The Relations of Religion, Art, and Philosophy," and later, in connection with the philosophy of Plato, "The Place of Art in Education." These led me in the following summer to write more carefully, and after a good deal of reading, on The Power of Art in Education; and from that time forward the subject of Beauty has been always one of interest to me, and for years one of much thought. The time that has elapsed since my first interest in the subject will explain my references to works of such a miscellaneous character; for, while not always writing on the subject, I have always been taking note of anything that bore on it in the course of my reading. Among the first works that I read on Beauty were those of Alison and Jeffrey, and of Cousin, and Professor Blackie, and Dr. Mac Vicar. The Origin of the Sense of Beauty

Book Description
Excerpt from The Origin of the Sense of Beauty: Some Suggestions Upon the Source and Development of the AEsthetic Feelings A book of these dimensions, with a title that seems to suggest many and heavy volumes, needs, if not an apology, at least an explanation. It may, therefore, be stated at once that no attempt is made to investigate the highly complicated question as to what constitutes beauty in the various forms of art, or to formulate any kind of laws which have to be satisfied in order that an object may rightly be described as beautiful. The chief object of the book is to maintain that our artistic likes and dislikes, however difficult to explain, must be based upon instinctive preferences originally necessary for survival, and, as in the case of the other instincts, in some faculty that can be traced in a rudimentary form among the lower animals. That is to say, that taste - the feeling by which we discriminate the beautiful from the ugly - can no longer be considered an ultimate inexplicable faculty, sufficiently explained by the statement that we are born with likes and dislikes, beyond which fact inquiry is idle. Book Description
Excerpt from Beauty Ugliness: And Other Studies in Psychological AEsthetics Dealing with my previous volume, Laura; nobilij, the most intelligent of my critics complained that I took our aesthetic preferences for granted, Without explaining their nature or even proving their exist ence. If that rash reviewer really thirsts for psychological aesthetics, he may find some temporary refreshment in the present volume, Which contains as much of the How and W by of Beauty and Ugliness as I have been able to squeeze out of some rather dry books and out of fifteen years of my own and my fellow-worker's observations. If he, or any other inquisitive person, should then remain With unslaked curiosity about asthetics, he must go to the Psycho logical Laboratories of Germany and America, Where he may, in return for further knowledge, be used up as an experimental subject.
