Book Description
Discusses the overall aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a new direct solar powered thermal desalination plant, with a novel configuration, suitable for local South African conditions. The objectives of the project were to: Study and evaluate previous solar desalination technologies in South Africa to assist with the development of a new locally designed desalination system. Design and construct a pilot solar desalination plant from appropriate and inexpensive, modular, low-maintenance and generally sustainable components. Evaluate the effectiveness of the pilot plant in delivering adequate volumes of potable water. Evaluate the effectiveness of the pilot plant in the removal of salts from brackish water. Evaluate various optimisation options for the pilot plant. Determine the potential for direct solar desalination in South Africa as a water treatment option for small remote rural communities. Investigate the potential environmental impact of the plant.
