This study investigates the determinants of Chinese outward direct investment (ODI) and the extent to which three special explanations (capital market imperfections, special ownership advantages and institutional factors) need to be nested within the general theory of the multinational firm. We test our hypotheses using official Chinese ODI data collected between 1984 and 2001. We find Chinese ODI to be associated with high levels of political risk in, and cultural proximity to, host countries throughout, and with host market size and geographic proximity (1984-1991) and host natural resources endowments (1992-2001). We find strong support for the argument that aspects of the special theory help to explain the behaviour of Chinese multinational enterprises.

In the past three decades, China has transformed itself from a central-planned, agricultural economy to the world's manufacturing base and growth engine. Expanding at an average annual rate of more than 10 percent, the Chinese economy is now the second-largest in the world. Globalization is undoubtedly one of the most important drivers behind this extraordinary growth.Globalization is not a one-way process. As Chinese businesses grow and mature, they are increasingly turning to outward direct investment (ODI) to diversify their product portfolios, take advantage of cheaper labor in foreign countries, and claim reliable sources of raw materials.In recent years, several instances of Chinese outward direct investment received wide media attention. Among them were Lenovo Group's purchase of IBM's personal computer division in 2005 and Wanda Group's acquisition of AMC Entertainment in 2012. In 2011, China's ODI stock was 1.7 percent of the world's total, or 5.2 percent of the nation's GDP. The People's Republic of China can become an important and influential player in the world through its overseas investment to developing countries. This paper examines and compares the determinants of Chinese and U.S. direct investment around the world. We adopt the cross sectional analysis for the year 2005 and 2006. The basic as well as the improved Sala-i-Martin extreme bound analysis are applied to search for robust determinants. The result suggests that distance, infrastructure facilities and energy reserves are important factors to attract investment from China and U.S. Moreover, institutional factors are not robust determinants for China's outward direct investment, suggesting that Chinese investors do not pay enough attention to institutional risks in their investment.
