Book Description
Excerpt from The Death of the Lion I had simply, I suppose, a change of heart, and it must have begun when I received my manuscript back from Mr. Pinhorn. Mr. Pinhorn was my "chief," as he was called in the office: he had accepted the high mission of bringing the paper up. This was a weekly periodical, which had been supposed to be almost past redemption when he took hold of it. It was Mr. Deedy who had let the thing down so dreadfully: he was never mentioned in the office now save in connexion with that misdemeanour. Young as I was I had been in a manner taken over from Mr. Deedy, who had been owner as well as editor; forming part of a promiscuous lot, mainly plant and office-furniture, which poor Mrs. Deedy, in her bereavement and depression, parted with at a rough valuation. I could account for my continuity but on the supposition that I had been cheap. I rather resented the practice of fathering all flatness on my late protector, who was in his unhonoured grave; but as I had my way to make I found matter enough for complacency in being on a "staff." Book Description
The Death of the Lion Henry James Unregenerate as I was I could read the queer implications of this speech. The present owner's superior virtue as well as his deeper craft spoke in his reference to the late editor as one of that baser sort who deal in false representations. Mr. Deedy would as soon have sent me to call on Neil Paraday as he would have published a "holiday-number"; but such scruples presented themselves as mere ignoble thrift to his successor, whose own sincerity took the form of ringing doorbells and whose definition of genius was the art of finding people at home... We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lesson of the Master: The Death of the Lion; The Next Time, and Other Tales I was invited, and all urgently, to contribute to the first number, and was regaled with the golden truth that my composition might absolutely assume, might shamelessly parade in, its own organic form. It was disclosed to me, wonderfully, that - so golden the air pervading the enterprise - any projected contribution might conform, not only unchallenged but by this circumstance itself the more esteemed, to its true intelligible nature. For any idea I might wish to express I might have space, in other words. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Terminations: The Death of the Lion, the Coxon Fund, the Middle Years, the Altar of the Dead I may as well say at once that this little record pretends in no degree to be a picture either of my introduction to Mr. Faraday or of certain proxi mate steps and stages. The scheme of my nar rative allows no space for these things, and in any case a prohibitory sentiment would be attached to my recollection of so rare an hour. These meagre notes are essentially private, so that if they see the light the insidious forces that, as my story itself shows, make at present for publicity will simply have overmastered my precautions. The curtain fell lately enough on the lamentable drama. My memory of the day I alighted at Mr. Faraday's door is a fresh memory of kindness, hospitality, compassion, and of the wonderful illumi nating talk in which the welcome was conveyed. Some voice of the air had taught me the right moment, the moment of his life at which an act of unexpected young allegiance might most come home. He had recently recovered from a long, grave illness. I had gone to the neighbouring inn for the night, but I spent the evening in his company, and he insisted the next day on my sleeping under his roof. I had not an indefinite. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lion at the Well At flare of sun, with sullen gun, That dreamed of tiger's vein undone, For blood and fame, I chased for game, Alone. My scribbling feet on earth's fair parchment blotted Until the sun fell smoking out of heaven. No more a circle or a shield, Like wax it melted on the field. The day was wrapped and redly sealed But that same night had things to show to me. O'er highland crag, my legs I drag Nor yet the death of lean-ribbed stag, I lost my gun. My' friendly gun Slipped from me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lion's Share The colonel was looking at the newspaper Was it money? Said he; for a glance at the dabbled sheet had brought him the headings of the stock quotations: Another Sharp Break in Stocks. New Low Records. It had been money. Later, after what needed to be done was over, after doctors and officers of the law were gone, Colonel Winter heard the wretched story. A young, reckless, fatally attractive Southerner, rich friends, college societies, joyous times; noth ing really wicked or vicious, only a surrender to youth and friendship and pleasure, and then the day of reckoning - duns, college warnings, the menace of black disgrace. The young fellow was an orphan, with no near kindred save one brother much Older than he. The brother was reputed to be rich, according to Southern standards, and young Mercer, who had just come into a modest patrimony of his own, invested in his brother's ventures. As to the character of these ventures, whether flimsy or substantial, the colonel's in formants were absolutely ignorant. All they knew of the elder Mercer was that he was Often in New York and had a lot to do with Wall Street. He wasn't a broker; no, he was trying to raise money to hapg on to some big properties that he had. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
