Yesterday, over our public edifices, the national flag, half hoisted, drooped heavily--its stars obscured. A public calamity was indicated. It was the death of Mr. Calhoun. His home, sir, was nearly one thousand miles distant. Who will so far forget the Roman maxim, as to despair of the Republic when there is such sympathy between its remote members?
