In the long nineteenth century, the specter of lost manuscripts loomed in the imagination of antiquarians, historians, and writers. Teeter traveled along the Saint John River, the great thoroughfare of Native New Brunswick, Canada, with his principal Maliseet consultant, Peter Lewis Paul.
