Book Description
From 1840 Miller was based in Edinburgh, where he was the founding editor of "The Witness" newspaper. This is his account of his summer breaks from journalism, seeking out fossils around Scotland in all weather conditions. It was written for publication in "The Witness". He often adopts a personal and autobiographical strain in his writing, illuminating observations with anecdotes from his own experiences. His style was influenced by his favourite boyhood authors, 18th-century writers such as Addison and Pope. The preface alludes to the tragic circumstances surrounding Miller's untimely death before the first publication of this work.

Excerpt from The Cruise of the Betsey, or a Summer Holiday in the Hebrides: With Rambles of a Geologist or Ten Thousand Miles Over the Fossiliferous Deposits of Scotland During the month of May (1857) Mrs. Miller came to Malvern, after recovering from the first shock of bereave ment, in search of health and repose, and evidently h0ping to do justice, on her recovery, to the literary remains of her husband. Unhappily the excitement and anxiety naturally attaching to a revision of her husband's works proved over much for one suffering under such recent trial, and from an affection of the brain and spine which ensued; and, in con sequence, Mrs. Miller has been forbidden, for the present, to engage in any work of mental labour.
