Book Description
Excerpt from The Creed of Christ: A Study in the Gospels The Chinese have a. Beautiful custom. On their mountain roads, at important turns in the way, or near the hardest places, they erect shelters of rest, where the weary traveller may enjoy the prospect and refresh himself for climbing still further upward. Something like this is my justification for sending forth this little book. It is not claimed that a new Christ is here set forth, or that startlingly new truths have been discovered concerning the Christ already known. The claim is simply that at a turn in the arduous way I 'have caught a glimpse of Jesus from what, to me, is a fresh viewpoint. And on the spot I set up this wayside shrine, that others, also, in passing may look and see and be refreshed. Book Description
Excerpt from The Christianity of Christ But, alas, the roots of the tree penetrated to the fountain, and the whole was tainted, and now the spring is neglected and its waters forsaken. So men have often spoiled the truth as it is in Jesus by attempting to improve it. Instead of accepting it as it is in all its native plainness, undoctored and un alloyed, they have sought to subtract from it here and add to it there, and thus have either robbed it of its strength and glory, or turned thirsty souls from it altogether. The Apostles' Creed

The Apostles' Creed PDF Author: Henry A. Stimson
Publisher: Forgotten Books

Pages : 378

Book Description
Excerpt from The Apostles' Creed: In the Light of Modern Discussion I rejoice to believe that we are all getting nearer to Christ and therefore nearer to one another. In using the ancient creeds and seeking to understand them we need not be thought unbrotherly or divisive the Church has a common and precious inheritance. I am glad to adopt the words of the Unitarian, Dr E. H. Sears. In his book The Heart of Christ, he says: Those who acknowledge Jesus Christ as the supreme authority and guide, and enter more into his all-revealing mind, are making progress toward the harmonizing truths which he represents. However wide apart they may be at the start their progress is ever on converging lines. Essential truth becomes more and more central and manifest, the'non-essential falls away to its subordinate place, and orthodox and unorthodox move alike toward a higher and higher unity. It is not that one sect is making a conquest of the others, but Jesus Christ is making a conquest of us all There is no rea son then to be afraid to know what the Church believes. Book Description
Excerpt from Creed and Character Now, this is what we are so strangely given to ignore. We discuss Christianity as a set of theological ideas, which have more or less value; or we examine into its facts and records, by which it subjects itself to historical criticism. But we seem to forget that what it claims to be is a living Kingdom of Christ; by which it means that it attempts to assimilate to itself the entire body of human affairs, whether internal or external, whether private or social, so that they shall obviously and visibly display the dominion of a single master-mind, the Mind of Christ. The validity, indeed, of this dominion, its potency, its authority - these depend on the literal reality of certain historical facts. If Christ did not rise again the third day, no such dominion can exist. But, if the dominion exists at all, then it exists in the form of what I have spoken: and, if so, then it is, through out its length and breadth, the manifestation of a Personal Will in action Upon the affairs of earth. Bible Lessons on the Creed (Classic Reprint)

Bible Lessons on the Creed (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Charles H. Hayes
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780483557963
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 214

Book Description
Excerpt from Bible Lessons on the Creed That the truths expressed in the Creed are of importance for a child to know is hardly open to question. The Creed is a summary of the Gospel story, a brief statement of the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ. This we propose to take as the theme which our course shall endeavor to bring home to the children. And as the basis of each lesson we propose to take a passage of the Bible, so chosen as to set' forth in order the great ways in which God has made himself known as the God of love. The theme of each lesson is, therefore, a certain aspect of the central theme of the course, and is, at the same time, definite and complete in itself. In the development of each lesson we aim to keep close to the revelation recorded in the Bible, and in the course as a whole to give prominence, as the Creed does, to those great facts in the life of Jesus Christ by which he is made manifest and God the Father is fully revealed through him. Thus the Bible supplies the sources for all our teaching. The method of preparation and teaching here proposed is described under the heading How to Teach the Creed, and worked out in the following pages. How the children are expected to prepare the lessons is shown by the Outline for Pupils, to which the present Lessons correspond. Whether the method is practical and adapted for general use can be determined only by a fair trial. It has, at least, been planned and developed with the advice and cooperation of skilled teachers, and it is now offered to the Church only after being tested and improved by seven years' use. The Outline was printed in a simpler form in 1898, and helps for the teachers were prepared in manuscript. They both have been used since that time in St. Mark's Sunday-school, Washington. If the method has value, the credit is due to the teachers of St. Mark's; for it could have been worked out only by their intelligent and faithful cooperation, acknowledgment of which is most thankfully made. Too great emphasis can hardly be laid on the fact that this book is not intended to supply ready-made lessons. It aims to give material for the teacher to use, and to present it in such a manner that good lessons can readily be pre pared. But it is purposely arranged in such a way that the material is not available for teaching in its present form. To use it you must make the material your own, think the lesson through, and plan how you will teach it in class. Book Description
Excerpt from The Cross of Christ What more embarrassing, than to be oppressed with a sense of the grandeur of your subject, and yet crushed with a consciousness of incapacity to do it justice! In whatever aspect we view the subject, Christianity is transcendent alike, in claim and disclosure. The supernatural and extraordinary, however, connected with the Christian religion, so far from furnishing a presumption against its truth, suggests, in fact, a strong antecedent probability in favor of its divine original.
