Book Description
Excerpt from The Cow This little book does not pretend to be a textbook nor a treatise on dairy husbandry, for there are plenty of such books already. It is simply an effort to set down the ideas of a dairyman concerning his own business and to view the cow as a very interesting animal who after all these thousands of years of close companionship with man still retains many primal instincts and many hereditary tendencies. So we may ask the meaning of old winding cow-paths and little calves hidden in the bushes and the tragedy of the herd bull condemned to spend his days tied to a post by a ring in his nose (like Sampson, old and blind, grinding meal for his conquerers) when his place is to march proudly at the head of his obedient herd. Dairying has grown into a vast and complex and exceedingly modern business, conducted in great manufacturing establishments with white tile and steam sterilizers and pure cultures and bacterial counts; yet there ought to be a place to revive at least the memory of old farm houses under great trees and herds winding down the road at milking time, and farm women making butter in cool spring-houses or shadowy white-washed cellars. Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea

Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea PDF Author: O. H. Peters
Publisher: CUP Archive
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 206

Book Description
Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Pages : 292

Book Description
Excerpt from The Red Cow: And Her Friends It is always a pleasure to avoid responsibility and it gives me a feeling of relief to be able to announce that I am not wholly responsible for this collection of sketches. When it was suggested that I should put together the articles dealing with the Red Cow, and the other farm animals, I felt reluctant to trouble the public with a somewhat frivolous book at the present time. It seemed as if Fate were with me for when it was decided to go on with the book it was found that my file of clippings had been lost. But the matter was still urged and, remembering that at different times readers had written to me saying that they were in the habit of clipping the articles for future reference, I published a paragraph telling of my predicament. The result was that I received clippings from all parts of Canada and some were even sent from neighbouring States. Through the kindness of my unknown friends I am able to offer a book which they have really edited. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Cow Puncher The shadows of the spruce-trees fell north eastward, pointing long, cool fingers across belts of undulating prairie or leaning lazily against the brown foot-hills. Like an incandescent globe the afternoon sun hung in the bowl of a cloudless heaven, filmy with heat, but the hot rays were met by the high altitude of the ranch country and lost their force like a blow half struck. And among the spruce - trees it was cool and green, and clear blue water rippled over beds of shining gravel.
