Book Description
Excerpt from The Counter-Reformation It is not always easy to define the correct use of even so well-worn a phrase as 'the Counter-Reformation.' I have, however, done my best to suggest such a definition in the brief" Synopsis which I have prefixed to the following Essay, and which will perhaps under the circumstances not be regarded as altogether superfluous. Of the movement known under this name, I can hardly hope in the following sketch to have indicated more than the chief aspects, avoiding, as I very sincerely trust, at all events the worst of the pitfalls in the ground traversed. Religious partisanship, deplorable as it is in elaborate narratives, would be unbearable in a mere summary. As is well known, the characteristic powers of Ranke's genius as a historian were never exercised more conspicuously than in tracing the co-operation of religions and political purposes and motives in the period of the Catholic Reaction. Besides his History of the Popes, his French History - perhaps the most, finished of all his great works - will from this point of view always remain invaluable to the student. A History of the Reformation (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Thomas M. Lindsay

Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Reformation This History of the Reformation has been written with the intention of describing a great religious movement amid its social environment. The times were heroic, and produced great men, with striking individualities not easily weighed in modern balances. The age is sufficiently remote to compel us to remember that while the morality of one century can be judged by another, the men who belong to it must be judged by the standard of their contemporaries, and not altogether by ours. The religious revival was set in a framework of political, intellectual, and economic changes, and cannot be disentangled from its surroundings without danger of mutilation. All these things add to the difficulty of description. My excuse, if excuse be needed, for venturing on the task is that the period is one to which I have devoted special attention for many years, and that I have read and re-read most of the original contemporary sources of information. While full use has been made of the labours of predecessors in the same field, no chapter in the volume, save that on the political condition of Europe, has been written without constant reference to contemporary evidence. Book Description
Excerpt from The Reformation I deem it my first duty to thank our Catholic papers and periodicals for their kind reception of The Reformation. I did not expect such a favorable criticism. I have endeavored in this second edition to correct such typographical errors as appeared in the first. I have also tried to make plain the meaning of a few expressions which might easily be misunderstood. An index is now added to the work. Book Description
Excerpt from "The Counter Reformation"; "Movement"; Suggestions for the Solution of Present Difficulties: A Reply to the Pastoral Letter of the Right Rev. Lord Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol Those are hard words. It is easier to wound than to heal. Your Lordship attributes to us principles that would disgrace a gentleman, and much more so a faithful Churchman: disloyalty, disobedience, rebellion. To designate What we as true and loyal Churchmen do, to the best of our ability and knowledge, as our duty to the Queen, the Church, and the country, as a counter Reformation movement can only be understood as an Opinion founded on most insufficient acquaintance with facts imputing to us (what is odious to English honesty) sinister and unfaithful motives, in a manner and degree which we could hardly have expected from the hands of our Father in God. What we desire is recon ciliation and unity; but how are they to be obtained if such a course as this is pursued? Book Description
Excerpt from The Reformers; And the Theology of the Reformation IN introducing the present volume to the Public, the Editors feel that a few words of explanation may be desirable, in regard to the trust assigned to them, and the manner in which they have, in so far, attempted to discharge it. In the interview which, at Dr Cunningham's request, they had with him within a few hours of his death, he committed to them the charge of his whole writings and manuscripts connected with the College, to be deposited in the Library, and to be used and applied to any purpose they judged right; stating, that he gave them absolute power to do in the matter as they considered to be best for his character, and the good of the Church. The charge thus verbally intrusted to them was formally and legally confirmed by the Trustees acting under Dr Cunningham's settlement; so that the Editors became invested with the character of his Literary Executors, and with the full powers and responsibilities attaching to such an office. Book Description
'In the last two decades, the history of the Counter-Reformation has been stretched and re-shaped in numerous directions. Moreover, it challenges the conventional chronological parameters of the Counter-Reformation and introduces the reader to the latest research on global Catholicism. The Ashgate Research Companion to the Counter-Reformation presents a comprehensive examination of recent scholarship on early modern Catholicism in its many guises. This wide-ranging and original research guide is a unique resource for scholars and students of European and transnational history.
