The Converging Roles of Arms Control Verification, Confidence-building Measures and Peace Operations
Author: Patricia Bliss McFate
Publisher: The Division
ISBN:
Category : Arms control
Languages : en
Pages : 108
Book Description
This report explores the interrelationships among three processes: arms control verification, confidence-building and peacekeeping. It argues that in the current dangerous and unstable world, these three processes are undergoing changed demands, which brings each into closer relationship with the others. underlying this report is the premise that the synergistic relationships among these three processes can further contribute to international security, through both improved effectiveness and better use of limited resources. The study also emphasizes that the roles of the United Nations and other international bodies could be expanded and harmonized to contribute to greater transparency and security.

Confidence Building in the Arms Control Process
Author: James Macintosh
Publisher: The Division
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 108
Book Description
Confidence building as an approach to international security management has traditionally focused on developing agreements featuring well-known confidence building measures, as opposed to the activity of confidence building itself. This report begins with a critical review of traditional confidence building ideas which highlights some problems that continue to undermine conventional treatments of confidence building. It then discusses in some detail the essential elements that comprise the transformation view of confidence building. That view shifts attention away from operational measures towards the processes associated with their development and application. According to that view, confidence building is a distinct activity undertaken by policy makers with the minimum intention of improving some aspects of a traditionally antagonistic security relationship through security policy co-ordination and co-operation. It requires interaction among officials and experts from participating states when conditions are supportive of change.

Global and Regional Approaches to Arms Control in the Middle East
Author: Gamal M. Selim
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 364229314X
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 124
Book Description
Since the end of the Cold War, the Middle East has been the focus of various projects for the establishment of arms control (including CBMs) regimes. Whereas some of these projects were initiated at the global level, others were discussed and debated at the regional level. This book analyses the global and regional dynamics of arms control in the Middle East in the post-Cold War era. It examines American and European arms control projects, the contexts in which they were presented, the reactions of major regional actors, and their impacts on arms control efforts in the region. It assesses Arab perceptions of the motivations for and constraints on establishing arms control regimes. It also explores the prospects of regional arms control in the context of the ongoing Arab Spring with its ramifications for Arab regional politics, and provides a new perspective on arms control in the Middle East. This volume enriches the ongoing discourse, which to date has been dominated by mainly Western perspectives.

The Selected Works of George R. Lindsey
Author: George R. Lindsey
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1487518145
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 324
Book Description
During a government career that spanned nearly the whole of the Cold War, George R. Lindsey gained a reputation as a leading defence scientist and military strategist for Canada’s Defence Research Board. His research and writing played a vital role in shaping Canadian policy in air defence, anti-submarine warfare, the militarization of space, and other areas of crucial concern in the nuclear age. The Selected Works of George R. Lindsey provides full access to a wealth of previously classified historical material regarding the scientific and technical aspects of Canadian defence and national security in the Cold War. Insightful and eye-opening, Lindsey’s writings shed light not only on one of Canada’s most influential civil servants of the Cold War era, but on the strategies, priorities, and inner workings of the Canadian defence establishment during an active and politically volatile period in world affairs.
