Book Description
Excerpt from The Control of Reservoir Silting This report has been prepared in an effort to meet the increasing needs and requests of reservoir owners for information on silting con trol. It is the first publication in this country to describe and appraise all of the known methods of control. Many of these methods could be put into immediate use. The publication especially emphasizes the measures of watershed control and soil conservation, however, for these are the only practical means by which we can permanently pro teet most of our reservoirs from untimely loss from silting. In our present economy, it is not generally practicable to clear a major reser voir of sediment once it has filled up. Moreover, when a reservoir is filled to the point where it has no further value for storage, not only is the investment lost, but the irreplaceable reservoir site is gone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Silting and Desilting of Reservoirs

Silting and Desilting of Reservoirs PDF Author: Dan G. Batuca
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000446514
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 378

Book Description
The creation of river dams and the storage of water have been a strategy for survival for many centuries. Reservoirs have diverse functions, providing irrigation, water supply, storage of water, flood control, navigation and power generation. The silting of a reservoir is an unavoidable process. Although it cannot be halted, silting can be slowed down and controlled by a variety of soil conservation practices and by modifying agricultural practices in the catchment area. Other methods of reducing silting include the placing of certain engineering structures in the river system and the introduction of adequate strategies of reservoir operation. Silting and Desilting of Reservoirs includes aspects such as hydraulics, sediment transport, silting, sediment distribution, calculation and prediction of silting and solutions to reservoir silting.

Book Description
Excerpt from Designing and Construction of Storage Reservoirs Before entering upon such considerations as affect the selection of reservoir sites and their construction, a brief allusion to some of the most ancient works for impounding water may not be uninteresting. Of these the most prominent examples are undoubt edly to be found in Hindostan, Where the magnitude and antiquity of the storage Works cannot fail to arrest attention. These great Works, surpassing in their immensity What are conventionally esteemed to be the wonders of the world, the production of other countries and nations, took their ori gin in the necessities of the people and the variableness of the climate of India, andwere, in fact, great public' works on which the welfare of the people mainly depended. The climate of India, although singularly uniform in some respects from year to year, is remarkably variable as regards the rain fall; and in order to guard against the dis asters of famine and sickness, inevitably attendant on a scanty monsoon, the native princes were wont to make such provisions as large resources and an almost unlimited power enabled them, in order to obviate the difficulty that they had to contend with.
