Book Description
Excerpt from The Control of Hookworm Disease by the Intensive Method In Publication No. 1 of the International Health Board, entitled "The Eradication of Ankylostomiasis," were described the methods employed in the work directed against hookworm disease in British Guiana during 1914. The procedure there set forth has since come to be known as the "Intensive Method." It is being used in many countries in which measures against hookworm disease have been undertaken, and has been found to be applicable under a great variety of conditions. The continued demand for Publication No. 1 has led to the preparation of this new edition, which aims to bring the description of this working plan up to date by showing the modifications and developments which it has undergone since the original pamphlet was issued. Unlike Publication No. 1, which dealt entirely with the work in the Peter's Hall district of British Guiana, the present publication is intended to cover not the specific details of a campaign in any one country, but the general procedure followed in conducting any demonstration against hookworm disease by the intensive method. Book Description
Excerpt from Bibliography of Hookworm Disease When in 1910 the newly organized Rockefeller Sanitary Commission began to assist the Southern States in measures for the control of hook worm infection, it soon became evident that a considerable amount of information on this disease was already available in the literature, which needed to be made more readily accessible. With the organization of the International Health Board in 1913 and the broadening of the program of hookworm control to include foreign countries this need became even more apparent. One of the first steps of the new Board, therefore, was to undertake the preparation of a bibliography which is now published in order to put it at the service of hygienists and all others who are interested. Book Description
Excerpt from Hookworm Disease: Etiology, Pathology, Diagnosis, Prognosis, Prophylaxis Few diseases surpass the subject of this work in the strangeness of its history, the importance of its ravages, or the theoretic ease of its extinction. It probably existed from remote antiquity among trop ical peoples, and, although attempts have been made to trace it back to a very early period, these efforts fail for lack of the careful clinical methods of diagnosis that are necessary for the recognition of such diseases. For almost fifty years after the disease was made known in Italy, and after it had been the subject of many important investiga tions in diagnosis, biology, and treatment, it remained for us in America chiefly an interesting, but remote, fact, de void of practical relations. Its absence was accepted as evidence of the greater personal cleanliness and superior mode of life of our citizens, and at most it was feared that among recent immigrants cases might be imported and even spread in less favorable localities. No more striking ex ample of the transitory state of medical knowledge can be advanced than the proof brought within the last few years, not only that hookworms exist as human parasites in a large part of the country, but that they may with reason be looked upon as among the most important causes of diseases of the South in extent, in destruction of life, and in leading to physical and mental degeneration. The fact that the parasites in the United States belong to a new species is a most important one and very suggestive in its bearing on medical zoology.
