The purpose of this study was to begin placing Rudolf Forst's solo harp works into the broader context of twentieth-century harp literature. A secondary purpose was to shed light on the body of lesser-known works written by American composers between 1900 and 1980. Through a stylistic analysis of Forst's works, it is evident that his musical style was consistent with trends in American music during the early-to-late twentieth century. His early harp works, written during the 1940s, demonstrate characteristics of both German and French musical influences. Sequences, written in 1972, reveals how Forst was incorporating trends from the 1960s, which included atonality and tendencies toward the avant-garde. At the core of all of Forst's harp works is a balance between conservative and experimental compositional approaches that enables these works to remain accessible to both listeners and performers. Forst's solos for harp are also well-written, demonstrating his understanding of the instrument. The appendix of lesser-known solo harp works by American composers shows that Forst was not the only composer whose works have been overlooked in discussions of harp literature. Further research on Forst and the lesser-known body of works would allow for greater understanding of trends in harp literature during the twentieth century.

Welsh-born harpist and composer John Thomas performed for audiences throughout Europe serving as the harpist to Queen Victoria of England. He was trained in London at the Royal Academy of Music, yet remained loyal to his Welsh heritage throughout his life. He began composing at the age of 16 while still a student at the Academy and continued arranging and composing repertoire for harp well into the Twentieth Century. This document will show that John Thomas was instrumental in the development of virtuosic harp literature and the recognition of the double-action pedal harp as a concert instrument while maintaining a strong sense of Welsh Nationalism as demonstrated in his original compositions. Like the Welsh harpists and composers before him, Thomas collected and preserved Welsh Airs. In addition, Thomas participated at numerous Eisteddfoddau, lectured on the history of the Welsh Harp, and wrote the "Welsh Music History" article in the first edition of the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. However, unlike his predecessors, Thomas composed for the modern pedal harp and employed virtuosic techniques heretofore unexplored in Welsh harp music. Though this harpist, composer, and music historian produced a prolific output of virtuosic works and historical writings, very little has been documented on his life and career. There are no complete works lists in print. Many of Thomas' manuscripts and published works remain out of print in the National Library of Wales. The Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians contains only a brief article on this composer's life and career. Thomas is internationally recognized as a leading composer and performer among harpists of the Nineteenth Century. His works are still performed by harpists in recitals at international conferences and competitions including the World Harp Congresses. Further, Thomas' students became touring performers and made a significant mark on the performing arena throughout much of the Twentieth Century.

Over the course of the twentieth century, the harp became a more modern instrument; harpist-composer Carlos Salzedo (1885–1961) played an important role in this change. With harp music being lesser known than music of some other instruments, there is limited written information addressing the subject and even less information about newer harp repertoire, harpist-composers and composers who have written for the instrument. When French-born harpist Salzedo immigrated to the United States in the early twentieth century, he sought to promote the harp as a modern instrument while affiliated with ultramodernist composers of the New York music scene including Edgard Varèse, Henry Cowell and Dane Rudhyar. Salzedo was the first harp pedagogue to fully explore new technical and timbral possibilities of the harp: he focused on a less traditional way of composing for the harp and published new method books including his extended techniques and compositions along with his student, Lucile Lawrence. Salzedo’s ideas aligned with those of his social and artistic circle in the U.S.. He participated in the creation of new organizations such as the International Composers’ Guild with Varèse to focus on promoting international new works to audiences; and the National Association of Harpists to gather harpists from all around the country and its official journal, Eolian Review, disseminating articles regarding the harp and modern music. Salzedo was also highly involved in pedagogy by establishing high-school programs, higher education harp studios and a summer program. With these significant engagements, Salzedo created a vast community and network of students and influenced audiences, composers, and other harpists. This treatise describes Salzedo’s compositional characteristics, innovations, community building, and how these components inspired composers and performers to continue this growth of making the harp modern. In my contribution to promoting new works for harp, I have compiled works by composers from or based in the U.S. and Canada of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in a catalog. The goal of this catalog is to give these compositions more visibility to harpists and non-harpists. Without doubt, musical works are still to be added in the future as these lists are not exhaustive
