Book Description
The current vulnerabilities, at national and EU level, in terms of energy supply at appropriate and stable prices, through protected critical infrastructures, triggers multiple actions at the highest levels of decision. While aiming at sustaining and increasing the economic performance and, considering the environmental protection, at the same time, in this context, a major objective is achieving energy security and developing the internal energy market (the interconnection of transport networks, the expansion of the renewable energy sector, the increase of energy efficiency, the development of new technologies, eco-energy, etc.). Our paper, in addition to approaching the measures of the EC for ensuring the sustainable energy security of the entire EU space, refers to the increasing role of NATO in this regard, revealing also some political and military consequences.

Energy Security

Energy Security PDF Author: Adrian V. Gheorghe
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400707185
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 413

Book Description
In terms of energy security the Black Sea region is important to Europe. Inevitably and for very good reasons, a lot of attention has been given to the existing and planned pipeline routes going around or across the Black Sea. Much less attention has been given to the development of the Black Sea energy market in its own right and to the potential advantages of coping with some current and future energy issues in a multilateral regional format rather than through individual action at national level. The present book addresses, in a comprehensive manner, the current problematic of energy security and goes beyond pipeline politics, without playing down their continued significance; it addresses some topical questions related to the sustainability and resilience of energy systems as applicable to the Black Sea region.

Democratic Consolidation in Eastern Europe: Volume 2: International and Transnational Factors

Democratic Consolidation in Eastern Europe: Volume 2: International and Transnational Factors PDF Author: Jan Zielonka
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191529192
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 572

Book Description
This is the second volume in a two-volume series of books on democratic consolidation in Eastern Europe. The first volume focused on the issue of institutional engineering. This second volume analyses the external parameters of democratic consolidation in thirteen Eastern European countries: how different international actors and various economic, cultural and security types of transnational pressures have shaped democratic politics in the region. The aim is to contrast a set of democracy theories with empirical evidence accumulated in Eastern Europe over the last ten years. The volume tries to avoid complex debates about definitions, methods and the uses and misuses of comparative research. Instead it seeks to establish what has really happened in the region, and which of the existing theories are helpful in explaining these developments. The volume is divided into two parts. The first part presents a conceptual and comparative frame of analysis, the second consists of detailed studies of individual countries undergoing democratic consolidation. Case study chapters deal with the following countries: Estonia and Latvia, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Macedonia, the states of former Yugoslavia, Belarus and Ukraine, and finally Russia. The concluding chapter identifies a set of variables responsible for the enormous impact of external factors on democratic consolidation in Eastern Europe. It conceptualises the interplay of internal and external factors impinging upon democracy, and shows the interplay of different positive and negative types of external pressures. It also evaluates the conscious Western effort to craft or engineer democracy in Eastern Europe.
