Book Description
From prehistoric times, man has made use of skin, feather and fur in many diverse ways. Techniques were developed to prevent skins from putrefying, thus prolonging their 'sell by' date. In cold climes, fur and feathers provided warmth, whereas in warm climes brightly coloured feathers have been used as decorative elements in artefacts, particularly in clothing. Some of the methods used to decorate such artefacts required a great deal of skill, and it is interesting to consider how they developed. The papers presented in The Conservation of Fur, Feather and Skin describe methods of tanning ethnographic leather, preparation and conservation of clothing and artefacts, types of damage that may be encountered, methods of identifying the causes of the damage, the fading of feathers caused by light, and conservation techniques employed to prolong the lives of artefacts. Dirt removal techniques such as laser cleaning of parchment and feathers are compared with conventional methods. Plains Indian shirts, Inuit clothing and artefacts, and a Torres Strait turtleshell mask are discussed, as are the preparation and presentation of the exhibition Stolen Skins? which stimulates the consideration of many controversial issues.

Lasers in the Conservation of Artworks

Lasers in the Conservation of Artworks PDF Author: Klaus Dickmann
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540271767
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 513

Book Description
Since 1995, when Costas Fotakis first brought together restorers and scientists to discuss the potential of lasers in art conservation, the field has grown enormously in importance, and today restorers and laser scientists work together to develop new applications. This book presents the more than six dozen research papers prepared for LACONA V (Lasers in Art Conservation), held in Osnabrueck/Germany in September 2003. The fifth congress once again gathered restorers, art historians, museum staff, laser scientists and laser manufacturers. The topics include, among others: laser cleaning of artworks (case studies and side effects), removal of former conservation layers, fundamentals of laser-artwork interaction, online monitoring and process control, laser diagnostics, spectroscopy for monitoring and identification, networks and cooperation projects.

Conservation of Leather and Related Materials PDF Author: Marion Kite
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0750648813
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 364

Book Description
The conservation of skin, leather and related materials is an area that, until now, has had little representation by the written word in book form. Marion Kite and Roy Thomson, of the Leather Conservation Centre, have prepared a text which is both authoritative and comprehensive, including contributions from the leading specialists in their fields, such as Betty Haines, Mary Lou Florian, Ester Cameron and Jim Spriggs. The book covers all aspects of Skin and Leather preservation, from Cuir Bouillie to Bookbindings. There is significant discussion of the technical and chemical elements necessary in conservation, meaning that professional conservators will find the book a vital part of their collection. As part of the Butterworth-Heinemann Black series, the book carries the stamp of approval of the leading figures in the world of Conservation and Museology, and as such it is the only publication available on the topic carrying this immediate mark of authority.

The Feather Thief

The Feather Thief PDF Author: Kirk Wallace Johnson
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1101981628
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 338

Book Description
As heard on NPR's This American Life “Absorbing . . . Though it's non-fiction, The Feather Thief contains many of the elements of a classic thriller.” —Maureen Corrigan, NPR’s Fresh Air “One of the most peculiar and memorable true-crime books ever.” —Christian Science Monitor A rollicking true-crime adventure and a captivating journey into an underground world of fanatical fly-tiers and plume peddlers, for readers of The Stranger in the Woods, The Lost City of Z, and The Orchid Thief. On a cool June evening in 2009, after performing a concert at London's Royal Academy of Music, twenty-year-old American flautist Edwin Rist boarded a train for a suburban outpost of the British Museum of Natural History. Home to one of the largest ornithological collections in the world, the Tring museum was full of rare bird specimens whose gorgeous feathers were worth staggering amounts of money to the men who shared Edwin's obsession: the Victorian art of salmon fly-tying. Once inside the museum, the champion fly-tier grabbed hundreds of bird skins—some collected 150 years earlier by a contemporary of Darwin's, Alfred Russel Wallace, who'd risked everything to gather them—and escaped into the darkness. Two years later, Kirk Wallace Johnson was waist high in a river in northern New Mexico when his fly-fishing guide told him about the heist. He was soon consumed by the strange case of the feather thief. What would possess a person to steal dead birds? Had Edwin paid the price for his crime? What became of the missing skins? In his search for answers, Johnson was catapulted into a years-long, worldwide investigation. The gripping story of a bizarre and shocking crime, and one man's relentless pursuit of justice, The Feather Thief is also a fascinating exploration of obsession, and man's destructive instinct to harvest the beauty of nature.

Birds - Conservation, Research and Ecology

Birds - Conservation, Research and Ecology PDF Author: Heimo Mikkola
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 1837696195
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
Birds are among the best-known and most popular animals. With the help of modern technology like mobile identification, even non-academic birders can fully participate in scientific data collection. Unfortunately, birds suffer badly from agricultural changes, forest fires, logging, plastic waste, urban noise, and large windows. They may also carry viral diseases that will eventually affect humans. This book includes nine chapters from all over the world that discuss these problems and propose possible solutions for better conservation of birds.
