Academic Paper from the year 2017 in the subject Health - Public Health, De La Salle University (College of Liberal Arts), language: English, abstract: This report reviews published research-based data on the prevalence of anal intercourse without using condoms (AIWC) among men having sex with men (MSM) samples and the characteristics of MSM having AIWC. The number of MSM in various parts of the world and who are contracting sexually transmitted infections (STI), including human immunodeficiency virus infection, is increasing. Risk-reduction interventions need more nuanced information to further understand how AIWC, the main driver of the growth in the STI prevalence among MSM populations, can be better addressed. Overall, the findings indicate that there are large numbers of MSM samples reported to have engaged in AIWC (range: 12%-72%). There are a variety of characteristics found to be statistically significantly related with AIWC, many of which are related with the general life aspects of MSM. Risk-reduction interventions need to do more in reaching out to the MSM populations by broadening the focus, substance and impact of their efforts.

Choosing Unsafe Sex focuses on the ways in which condom refusal and beliefs regarding HIV testing reflect women's hopes for their relationships and their desires to preserve status and self-esteem. Many of the inner-city women who participated in Dr. Sobo's research were seriously involved with one man, and they had heavy emotional and social investments in believing or maintaining that their partners were faithful to them. Uninvolved women had similarly heavy investments in their abilities to identify or choose potential partners who were HIV-negative. Women did not see themselves as being at risk for HIV infection, and so they saw no need for condoms. But they did recommend that other women, whom they saw as quite likely to be involved with sexually unfaithful men, use them.

AIDS has become a ubiquitous disease of catastrophic proportions. In this 'sex study' included as part of the Advocate magazine in 1994, attitudes and sexual activities of 13,000 gay men nationwide were surveyed. A set of research hypotheses were made, these were: that there would be a relationship between various sociodemographic, intepersonal and relational, substance use, sexual, experiential, and health care variables and high-risk sexual behavior. Some of these hypotheses were confirmed, while others were not. The particular value of this study is that it was nationwide, contained large numbers of participants and large numbers of variables, included all sizes of metropolitan areas, and specifically defined high-risk sexual activity. While many of the results confirm previous studies, the constellation and clustering of results perhaps points to issues larger than HIV and high-risk sexual behaviors alone, issues that are fundamentally societal. It is hoped that basic societal changes in attitudes towards gay men and women will reduce the isolation, loneliness, and feelings of being different that may well underlie the high rates of drug use and the meaning of the nature of sexual activity that is often present in gay community. It is at this fundamental societal level that progress against AIDS will need to proceed.
