Cow Care in Hindu Animal Ethics

Cow Care in Hindu Animal Ethics PDF Author: Kenneth R. Valpey
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030284085
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
This open access book provides both a broad perspective and a focused examination of cow care as a subject of widespread ethical concern in India, and increasingly in other parts of the world. In the face of what has persisted as a highly charged political issue over cow protection in India, intellectual space must be made to bring the wealth of Indian traditional ethical discourse to bear on the realities of current human-animal relationships, particularly those of humans with cows. Dharma, yoga, and bhakti paradigms serve as starting points for bringing Hindu—particularly Vaishnava Hindu—animal ethics into conversation with contemporary Western animal ethics. The author argues that a culture of bhakti—the inclusive, empathetic practice of spirituality centered in Krishna as the beloved cowherd of Vraja—can complement recently developed ethics-of-care thinking to create a solid basis for sustaining all kinds of cow care communities.

Environment and Livestock in India

Environment and Livestock in India PDF Author: Shri Niwas Mishra
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
This book presents the first comprehensive study of the national and global environmental effects of India's livestock production system. The first few chapters provide a descriptive account of India's livestock biodiversity as determined by environmental conditions, modes of livestock farming, chief features of mixed livestock farming integrated with agriculture, and its direct and indirect linkages with environment. The authors have also formulated an environmental model of the livestock production system in an input-output framework. Environmental effects are shown to occur on both sides of the system. The model should be of interest to environmental scientists and economists. Based on the model the book provides estimates of greenhouse gases (methane) emission from cattle and buffaloes, carbon dioxide emission prevented due to animal energy use in agriculture arising out of fossil-fuel saving, arable land area saved by recycling agricultural by-products as animal feed, as also from during cake as a source of biofuel, and the saving of chemical fertilizers by using during as manure. The authors then value these positive environmental contributions in rupee terms. Interestingly, they conclude that the sum of these values is much more than the value of output of India's livestock sector as a whole. Finally, the book compares the environmental effects of the Indian dairy production system with that of the US. This comparison is particularly addressed to environmentally concerned readers in the developed world.

Cow-Keeping in India

Cow-Keeping in India PDF Author: Isa Tweed

Pages : 340

Book Description
Excerpt from Cow-Keeping in India: A Simple and Practical Book on Their Care, and Treatment, Their Various Breeds, and the Means of Rendering Them Profitable The knowledge I have thus acquired may be of some service to others, so I herein give my experience for what it may be worth. The method of treatment that I herein recommend, for cows in health and sickness, is what I have most successfully adopted for many years. I generally adhere to hom opathy, and in most cases it is the only effectual method of treatment; but in many cases I have found the native remedies very efficacious. I do not hesitate to prescribe the most effective remedy, be it hom opathic or native medicine, or anything else. As I have said, I have carefully read many books on cattle, their diseases and treatment; and in my notes I have tried as much as possible to avoid even the appearance of plagiarism. But it is impossible for any two persons writing on one subject, and especially a subject like this, to avoid often saying the same thing, and sometimes saying it in the same words. Amongst the first things I learned when I commenced life were: 1st, if I wished to succeed in anything, I must do the work myself and not trust another person to do it for me; 2nd, I must attend to every detail with equal fidelity. As with other matters in life so with the keeping of cows, personal care and supervision, and the strictest attention to details, are absolutely essential to success. The least negligence or delay will cause much and disappointment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
