Book Description
Over the last forty years I have been lucky enough to have experienced a unique career researching and developing composite materials, in both industry and academia, during a time of unprecedented expansion in the global composites business. Over that time, I have been involved in areas as diverse as the development of new and novel fibre and composite products through to fundamental materials research. My research efforts have been focussed in three main areas; the fibre-matrix interface region, fibre reinforcements and in particular glass fibres, and the structure-(re)processing-performance relationships of reinforced thermoplastics. The published output of that work is collected together in this series of volumes. The 21 papers collected in this volume summarise my research on interface and interphase carried out in the Advanced Composites Group of the University of Strathclyde. Much of the performance of fibre-reinforced polymer composites is defined by the structure and properties of the fibre-matrix interface region in these composites. The study of adhesion in this interface region can be divided into three general question or challenges.1) How best to measure and characterise the level of adhesion?2) Understanding what controls, and how to optimise, the level of adhesion.3) Relating that level of adhesion to macroscopic composite performance. The research conducted throughout my career has addressed all three of these issues at some point and so the papers is this volume will address aspects in all three of these categories.

The challenges faced by the experimental scientist in composite materials ranges across many scales from nanoscale to macroscale and across many disciplines from glass science, physical and organic chemistry, polymer science through to mechanics. Generating new knowledge and understanding across this spectrum of subjects often requires the development of new, or modification of existing, testing and characterisation methods. Along the way it is often necessary to re-examine the accepted understanding of existing test methods and the in-depth researching of new materials can often lead to new and improved understanding of the analysis methods themselves. The 26 papers collected in this volume summarise a forty year journey through the analysis and characterisation of fibres, sizings, interfaces and composite materials.

Controlled Interphases in Composite Materials

Controlled Interphases in Composite Materials PDF Author: Hatsuo Ishida

Book Description
The third International Conference on Composite Interfaces (ICCI-III) was held under the auspecies of ASM International, The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa), The Edison Polymer Innovation Co. (EPIC), Case Western Reserve University, Nippon Glass Fiber Co., Nitto Boseki Co., Office of Naval Reserach (ONR), SAMPE Japan, Teijin Co., Mobay Co., Union Carbide Co., and Vetrotex Sain-Gobain. The underlying philosophy of the conference continues to be the promotion of fundamental understanding of the structure and role of composite interfaces. With the growth of composite interface studies, the research direction naturally changes from characterization and understanding of interfacial structure to controlling this structure. For this reason, the conference was subtitled, "Controlled Interphase Structure." The rather unfamiliar phrase "interphase" is used to emphasize the interfacial region whose properties are different from the bulk. The importance of the interphase to the mechanochemical properties has been rapidly recognized among composite researchers in recent years. The conference incorporated nine sessions. No concurrent sessions were planned because of the strong interest among panicipants and organizers to intennix researchers from different disciplines. Papers presented were redistributed in Pans I throught V. Because of this, both the conference and proceedings are not organized based on the traditional disciplines or materials, but rather around concepts.
