Book Description
Excerpt from The Commonwealth and Restoration Stage There remains the pleasure of acknowledging the expert assistance of Mr. Hilary Jenkinson and Mr.' J. J. O'reilly, Assistant Keepers of the Public Records; and the helpful suggestions of Miss Lucy Drucker and of Dr. Arthur Sprague. My colleague, Dr. A. S. Borgman, has very kindly read and criticized the proof sheets. Without the cordial eu couragement of Professor H. E. Rollins I should hardly have undertaken this work, to which his labors have so largely contributed. Especially am I indebted to Professor G. L. Kittredge, whose alert and friendly interest from the begin ning has furthered my researches in every way; and above all, to my wife, who has not only made the labor a pleasure, but assumed no small part of it herself. The Crown's Servants

The Crown's Servants PDF Author: G. E. Aylmer
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 019154311X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 338

Book Description
The Crown's Servants is a major new study of English central government and the royal court from the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660 to the death of Charles II in 1685. A sequel to the author's two earlier studies, of royal officials under Charles I (1625-1642) and office-holders under the Commonwealth and the Cromwellian Protectorate (1649-1660), it sets out to explore the extent to which the restoration of the monarchy undid the changes brought about under the Republic. The author looks at the institutions of government, its methods and procedures, the terms and conditions of service, and its personnel both collectively and individually. He considers the policies, tasks, successes, and failures of the regime, and relates these to the process of state formation and to the impact of the state on society. This is both the culmination of a lifetime's work and a crucial contribution in its own right to the history of seventeenth century England and the development of English government.

Staging the revolution

Staging the revolution PDF Author: Rachel Willie
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 1784996149
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
Staging the revolution offers a reappraisal of the weight and volume of theatrical output during the commonwealth and early Restoration, both in terms of live performances and performances on the paper stage. It argues that the often-cited notion that 1642 marked an end to theatrical production in England until the playhouses were reopened in 1660 is a product of post-Restoration re-writing of the English civil wars and the representations of royalists and parliamentarians that emerged in the 1640s and 1650s. These retellings of recent events in dramatic form mean that drama is central to civil-war discourse. Staging the revolution examines the ways in which drama was used to rewrite the civil war and commonwealth period and demonstrates that, far from marking a clear cultural demarcation from the theatrical output of the early seventeenth century, the Restoration is constantly reflecting back on the previous thirty years.
