Lord Burlington

Lord Burlington PDF Author: Toby Barnard
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 9781852850944
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 364

Book Description
Despite Burlington's fame, surprisingly little has been written about him. Lord Burlington: Architecture, Art and Life presents a modern reassessment of his career, while setting him in a broader context than has usually been the case, to reflect both his interests outside architecture and to present his character in the round. Architecture is given pride of place, but his other interests, in land-owning, politics and literature, are also examined, throwing much new light on an exceptionally significant and attractive figure.

Power and Virtue

Power and Virtue PDF Author: Shiqiao Li
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040278108
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
This is the first full-length study on the connections between English architecture and intellectual change between 1660 and 1730. As new ideas developed in post-Restoration England across the realms of politics, culture, academia and morality, so too did architectural expression of these ideas. Power and Virtue articulately engages English architecture with notions of power and virtue in terms of empirical knowledge on the one hand and humanism and virtuosi on the other. Aimed at an academic readership in history and theory of architecture and the history of English architecture, this unique study will also interest those studying the ideas of material culture.

Articulating British Classicism

Articulating British Classicism PDF Author: Elizabeth McKellar
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351575317
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
Whereas the past decades have seen a profound reconsideration of eighteenth-century visual culture, the architecture of that century has undergone little evaluation. Its study, unlike that of the early modern period or the twentieth century, has continued to use essentially the same methods and ideas over the last fifty years. Articulating British Classicism reconsiders the traditional historiography of British eighteenth-century architecture as it was shaped after World War II, and brings together for the first time a variety of new perspectives on British classicism in the period. Drawing on current thinking about the eighteenth century from a range of disciplines, the book examines such topics as social and gender identities, colonialization and commercialization, notions of the rural, urban and suburban, as well as issues of theory and historiography. Canonical constructions of Georgian architecture are explored, including current evaluations of the continental intellectual background, the relationship with mid seventeenth-century Stuart court classicism and the development of the subject in the twentieth century.
