Hitler's Panzer Generals

Hitler's Panzer Generals PDF Author: David Stahel
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1009282786
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 335

Book Description
Germany's success in the Second World War was built upon its tank forces; however, many of its leading generals, with the notable exception of Heinz Guderian, are largely unknown. This biographical study of four German panzer army commanders serving on the Eastern Front is based upon their unpublished wartime letters to their wives. David Stahel offers a complete picture of the men conducting Hitler's war in the East, with an emphasis on the private fears and public pressures they operated under. He also illuminates their response to the criminal dimension of the war as well as their role as leading military commanders conducting large-scale operations. While the focus is on four of Germany's most important panzer generals - Guderian, Hoepner, Reinhardt and Schmidt - the evidence from their private correspondence sheds new light on the broader institutional norms and cultural ethos of the Wehrmacht's Panzertruppe.

Competing Voices from the Russian Revolution

Competing Voices from the Russian Revolution PDF Author: Michael C. Hickey
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313385246
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 614

Book Description
This new collection of documents helps students understand the complex texture of Russian public rhetoric and popular debate during World War I and the 1917 Revolution. How better to understand history than through the words of those who lived it? Competing Voices from the Russian Revolution: Fighting Words presents documents that underscore the extraordinary richness of public discussion about key events and issues during the 1917 Russian Revolution, one of the pivotal events in modern history. Carefully edited and annotated, the documents help clarify the issues while revealing the broad range of ways in which Russians understood the events unfolding around them. Focusing on public rhetoric and debate in Russia from the outbreak of World War I in 1914 through the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly in January 1918, the documents present the views not only of key political figures, but also of ordinary men and women—mothers, soldiers, factory workers, peasants, students, businesspeople, and educated professionals.

The Nature of Stalin's Dictatorship PDF Author: E. A. Rees
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0230524281
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 283

Book Description
This is the first attempt to systematically study the nature of the political leadership system under Stalin. It focuses both on the formal institutions of power, such as the Politburo, and on the informal networks of decision-making that were a central feature of his system of rule. It draws on a wealth of new archival material to highlight Stalin's relations with his co-leaders and wider elite groups, and offers different perspectives on the nature and degree of Stalin's system of personal power.

Molotov and Soviet Government

Molotov and Soviet Government PDF Author: Derek Watson
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1349248487
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 295

Book Description
Exploring such general issues as the differing roles of the Communist Party and the State in ruling the former Soviet Union and the exercise of political power in the Stalin regime, this first western study of the chief Soviet government body during the 1930s traces the history of the Council of People's Commissars (Sovnarkom) whilst Molotov was chairman. Sovnarkom co-ordinated the work of the commissariats (later to be called ministries) and supervised the implementation of the policies of collectivization and industrialization. It was intimately connected with the Great Purge as the heads of the secret police were commissars. Using recently available archival sources, the working of the institution and changes in its structure and membership are examined, as is the political history of the institution, including the parts played by Molotov, Ordzhonikidze, Kaganovich and other major politicians who were members during the critical decade in this development of Stalinism.
