The Coming Crisis in Accounting

The Coming Crisis in Accounting PDF Author: Ahmed Riahi-Belkaoui
Publisher: Praeger
ISBN: 089930379X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
In this book, Belkaoui turns his attention to significant problems he sees facing the accounting profession as a whole and examines their effects on the way accounting is practiced, on accountants' clients, and on business in general. The problems derive, Belkaoui explains, from new developments in the accounting environment including the organizational climate in CPA firms and the rising incidence of fraudulent cases. Arguing that these problems, if not resolved, will lead to a crisis of confidence in accounting and increasing government regulation of the profession, Belkaoui both identifies their causes and proposes solutions to avert a crisis in the field. The book is divided into six chapters, each of which addresses a particular problem in contemporary accounting. Belkaoui begins by describing a new conflictual order in the accounting environment and goes on to examine particular conflicts generated by the profession's heavy reliance on credentialism, its role in the fragmentation of services in CPA firms, and its tenuous position in the courts. The following chapters show how the credibility of accounting has been shaken by fraudulent cases and explores ways in which the accounting work process has declined. Finally, Belkaoui explores problems associated with the high levels of job dissatisfaction and turnover in CPA firms and problems in the production of accounting knowledge. Students of accounting as well as practicing professionals will find both a sobering assessment of current accounting practices and an illuminating look at potential solutions.

Preparing for the Next Financial Crisis

Preparing for the Next Financial Crisis PDF Author: Olivier de Bandt
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429949553
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 387

Book Description
The ramifications of the Global Financial Crisis, which erupted in 2007, continue to surprise not only the general public but also finance professionals, economists, and journalists. Faced with this challenge, Preparing for the Next Financial Crisis goes back to basics. The authors ask: what do theory and empirical observations tell us about the causes and the consequences of financial crisis and instability? In what has become an increasingly complex financial world, what lessons can we learn from economic policies, which have been implemented, and research, which has developed extremely rapidly in recent years, so as not to repeat past mistakes? In this comprehensive review of the literature, which is both complete and balanced, the authors highlight the points of consensus among economists and policymakers. They assess the capacity of economic policies and institutions in limiting the cost of financial instability. In conclusion, they ask if the financial system has become safer, in the light especially of the Covid-19 Global Crisis. Ten years after the GFC crisis, this is a timely review of the reform agenda, the progress made, and the areas where further changes need to be made to address new risks and challenges.

Technological Breakthroughs and Future Business Opportunities in Education, Health, and Outer Space

Technological Breakthroughs and Future Business Opportunities in Education, Health, and Outer Space PDF Author: Hooke, Angus
Publisher: IGI Global
ISBN: 1799867749
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 353

Book Description
It is widely accepted that the key to rising incomes for workers, for investors, and (indirectly) for welfare recipients is innovation. New ideas provide opportunities for investment in new products, new processes, and new markets. Exploitation of these opportunities by intrapreneurs and entrepreneurs gives rise to increases in labor productivity, which in turn lead to higher primary incomes for workers and investors and, via government redistributive mechanisms, larger transfers to welfare recipients. Since technology is the driver of innovation and the key to the subsequent economic and distributional benefits of this innovation, there is a need for researchers and businesspersons to have access to up-to-date information on emerging technologies and the business opportunities they provide. Technological Breakthroughs and Future Business Opportunities in Education, Health, and Outer Space discusses the economic, social, and cultural benefits that new technologies can provide in multidisciplinary industries with a unique emphasis on looking towards the impacts of these technologies across the next two decades. Within this theme, the book discusses the recent trends, future developments, and business opportunities surrounding new technologies including information technology and biotechnology. Additionally, the book investigates recent demands and disruptions in the health and education sectors as well as recent developments and forthcoming opportunities in the outer space sector and how newer technologies can enable and meet the growing demands of these industries. While covering all these technologies and their applications, this book is an ideal reference work for entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs, teachers, technologists, analysts, IT specialists, engineers, policymakers, medical professionals, government officials, space agencies, financial planners, public officials, and researchers and students working in areas that include but are not limited to technology, education, public health, medicine, business and management, aeronautics, and public policy.

No One Saw this Coming

No One Saw this Coming PDF Author: Dirk Johan Bezemer
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Accounting
Languages : en
Pages : 51

Book Description
This paper presents evidence that accounting (or flow-of-fund) macroeconomic models helped anticipate the credit crisis and economic recession. Equilibrium models ubiquitous in mainstream policy and research did not. This study identifies core differences, traces their intellectual pedigrees, and includes case studies of both types of models. It so provides constructive recommendations on revising methods of financial stability assessment. Overall, the paper is a plea for research into the link between accounting concepts and practices and macro economic outcomes.

The Next Economic Disaster

The Next Economic Disaster PDF Author: Richard Vague
Publisher: University of Pennsylvania Press
ISBN: 0812291107
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 101

Book Description
Current debates about economic crises typically focus on the role that public debt and debt-fueled public spending play in economic growth. This illuminating and provocative work shows that it is the rapid expansion of private rather than public debt that constrains growth and sparks economic calamities like the financial crisis of 2008. Relying on the findings of a team of economists, credit expert Richard Vague argues that the Great Depression of the 1930s, the economic collapse of the past decade, and many other sharp downturns around the world were all preceded by a spike in privately held debt. Vague presents an algorithm for predicting crises and argues that China may soon face disaster. Since American debt levels have not declined significantly since 2008, Vague believes that economic growth in the United States will suffer unless banks embrace a policy of debt restructuring. All informed citizens, but especially those interested in economic policy and history, will want to contend with Vague's distressing arguments and evidence.

13 Bankers

13 Bankers PDF Author: Simon Johnson
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 0307379221
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 338

Book Description
In spite of its key role in creating the ruinous financial crisis of 2008, the American banking industry has grown bigger, more profitable, and more resistant to regulation than ever. Anchored by six megabanks whose assets amount to more than 60 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, this oligarchy proved it could first hold the global economy hostage and then use its political muscle to fight off meaningful reform. 13 Bankers brilliantly charts the rise to power of the financial sector and forcefully argues that we must break up the big banks if we want to avoid future financial catastrophes. Updated, with additional analysis of the government’s recent attempt to reform the banking industry, this is a timely and expert account of our troubled political economy.
