Picasso Miró Dalí
Author: Palazzo Strozzi (Florence, Italy)
Publisher:
ISBN: 9788857209784
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The birth of modernity as seen through sixty stunning early works by three of the greatest artists of all times. This catalogue begins by examining Picasso's pre-cubist period, between 1900 and 1905, while closely contrasting works created by Juan Miró between 1915 and 1920 with those by Salvador Dalí in the five-year period between 1920-1925, in order to highlight the differences and stylistic relationships marking the period prior to the two artists' adherence to Surrealist poetics. In order to enquire into particular aspects of the early production of these artists, the authors have chosen works rarely exhibited in public or published; yet these fascinating paintings influenced what was to come, and they include The Spanish Dancer from 1901 by Picasso, Threshing by Mirò from 1918, and Neo-cubist academy by Dalì, which dates from 1926. Picasso's early work is profoundly influenced by the artist's political convictions: in Madrid in 1901 Picasso founded the magazine "Arte Joven", which frequently published unforgiving images of the plight of the proletariat. As for Miró, he rejected figurative painting as an expression of the cultural identity of the governing classes and also saw cubism as a "political tool". Much younger than Picasso and Miró, Dalí was ousted from the Academy in 1926, shortly prior to undertaking final examinations, for having declared that no one in the faculty was sufficiently competent to examine him. His early work is marked by a complete mastery of pictorial techniques, an example is Girl at the window from 1926, depicted with vivid realism.

Greece
Author: Roderick Beaton
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 022680979X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 505
Book Description
For many, “Greece” is synonymous with “ancient Greece,” the civilization that gave us much that defines Western culture today. But, how did Greece come to be so powerfully attached to the legacy of the ancients in the first place and then define an identity for itself that is at once Greek and modern? This book reveals the remarkable achievement, during the last three hundred years, of building a modern nation on the ruins of a vanished civilization—sometimes literally so. This is the story of the Greek nation-state but also, and more fundamentally, of the collective identity that goes with it. It is not only a history of events and high politics; it is also a history of culture, of the arts, of people, and of ideas. Opening with the birth of the Greek nation-state, which emerged from encounters between Christian Europe and the Ottoman Empire, Roderick Beaton carries his story into the present moment and Greece’s contentious post-recession relationship with the rest of the European Union. Through close examination of how Greeks have understood their shared identity, Beaton reveals a centuries-old tension over the Greek sense of self. How does Greece illuminate the difference between a geographically bounded state and the shared history and culture that make up a nation? A magisterial look at the development of a national identity through history, Greece: Biography of a Modern Nation is singular in its approach. By treating modern Greece as a biographical subject, a living entity in its own right, Beaton encourages us to take a fresh look at a people and culture long celebrated for their past, even as they strive to build a future as part of the modern West.

The Parthenon Bomber
Author: Christos Chrissopoulos
Publisher: Other Press, LLC
ISBN: 1590518373
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 97
Book Description
A novel at once metaphorical and iconoclastic, The Parthenon Bomber exposes the painful and maddening paradox of contemporary Greece. “Blow up the Acropolis” was the 1944 call to action by the surrealist circle the Harbingers of Chaos. Sixty years later, a young man obliges. The Parthenon has been destroyed, the city orphaned. Is it still Athens? All eyes are on the empty hill, now smoky and ashen. Cries of distress, indifference, and fanaticism fill the air. What were his reasons? How will he be punished for this unspeakable act of violence? What does it mean for Greece, now deprived of its greatest symbol? This provocative tale reveals the unique dilemma of a country still searching for an identity beyond its past as the birthplace of Western civilization.

Divine Pleasures
Author: Terence McInerney
Publisher: Metropolitan Museum of Art
ISBN: 1588395901
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 276
Book Description
As one of the finest holdings of Indian art in the West, the Kronos Collections are particularly distinguished for paintings made between the sixteenth and early nineteenth centuries for the Indian royal courts in Rajasthan and the Punjab Hills. These outstanding works, many of which are published and illustrated here for the first time, are characterized by their brilliant colors and vivid, powerful depictions of scenes from Hindu epics, mystical legends, and courtly life. They also present a new way of seeking the divine through a form of personal devotion—known as bhakti—that had permeated India’s Hindu community. While explaining the gods, demons, lovers, fantastical creatures, and mystical symbols that are central to literature and worship, this publication celebrates the diverse styles and traditions of Indian painting. Divine Pleasures features an informative entry for each work and two essays by scholar Terence McInerney that together outline the history of Indian painting and the Rajput courts, providing fresh insights and interpretations. Also included are a personal essay by expert and collector Steven M. Kossak and an examination of Hindu epic and myth in Mughal painting, which lays important foundations for Rajput painting, by curator Navina Najat Haidar. Through their research and observations, the authors deepen our understanding and underscore the significance of Indian painting. Divine Pleasures presents a nuanced view of a way of life intimately tied to the seasons, the arts, and the divine.
