The Collected Poems of Edmund Gosse (Classic Reprint)
Author: Edmund Gosse
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781332568727
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 390
Book Description
Excerpt from The Collected Poems of Edmund Gosse Most of these verses appeared in certain volumes, which, after being several times re-issued, have now long been out of print. They are almost unknown to readers of the present day, and their titles, which had their moment of notoriety, are, I believe, forgotten. These were their names, with their dates of publication: On Viol and Flute, 1873. New Poems, 1879. Fireguard in Exile, 1885. In Russet and Silver, 1894. There are other collections, which I need not specify, but, whatever the year of publication, the verses belong in essence to a period which has ceased to exist, to an age which is as dead as the dodo. If I permit them to be reprinted, it is with a hope that they may, here and there, and for a little while, awaken an echo in ears that now for the first time become aware of them. I should like, if possible, to reach a new generation, since the old one has nearly passed away. There must always be something pathetic to an elderly man in reviving the recollections of his youth, and nowhere can those recollections be so poignant as in the verses with which, however artlessly, he expressed the passions, the reveries, the tender hopes and fears of adolescence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. The Rise of the Memoir
Author: Alex Zwerdling
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198755783
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 251
Book Description
The Rise of the Memoir traces the growth and extraordinarily wide appeal of the memoir. Its territory is private rather than public life, shame, guilt, and embarrassment, not the achievements celebrated in the public record. What accounts for the sharp need writers like Rousseau, Woolf, Orwell, Nabokov, Primo Levi, and Maxine Hong Kingston felt to write (and to publish) such works, when they might more easily have chosen to remain silent? Alex Zwerdling explores why each of these writers felt compelled to write them as that story can be reconstructed from personal materials available in archival collections; what internal conflicts they encountered while trying; and how each of them resisted the private and public pressures to stop themselves rather than pursuing this confessional route, against their own doubts, without a reasonable expectation that such works would be welcome in print, and eventually find an empathetic audience. Reconstructing this process in which a dubious project eventually becomes a compelling product-a "memoir" that will last-illuminates both what was at stake, and why this serially invented open form has reshaped the expectations of readers who welcomed a vital alternative to "the official story."
