Thomas H. Head Civil War Letters
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Little Rock Expedition, Little Rock, Ark., 1863
Languages : en
Pages :
Book Description
Five letters written by Capt. Thomas H. Head to wife Saphronia (Glenwood, IA) while encamped at Rolla, Missouri (Dates: Nov. 9, Dec. 16 & 26, 1861; and Jan. 6 and 12, 1862). The letters include comments on condition of the troops and casualties, raids of rebel supplies and equipment, the Battle of Salem, and other fighting between Rolla and St. Louis. Letter of December 27, 1861 mentions an attempt on the life of his orderly sergeant by three members of Company A (DeLionel Haynes/Haines, John Woodworth and Benjamin Tabor) that resulted in injury of his company's drummer. Capt. Head--along with drummer Benjamin O. Sheldon--intervened in the incident and was almost shot himself in an attempt to disarm one of the assailants. The same letter also comments on the incident in which Gen. Grenville M. Dodge's pistol accidentally discharged, wounding him in the leg. There is also brief mention of wives visiting their husbands in camp. Accompanying the five letters of Thomas Head are two letters written to Saphronia from brothers who were members of Company D of the 1st Iowa Cavalry. Perry Crosswait wrote his sister from Camp Warren (Burlington, IA) on August 21, 1861, and William H. Crosswait wrote to Saphronia on September 1, 1863 from Little Rock, AR. William's letter includes comments on the capture of Little Rock.

Yours Till Death
Author: John Cotton
Publisher: University of Alabama Press
ISBN: 0817350438
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 145
Book Description
"These letters from a yeoman farmer in the Confederate Army to his wife in Coosa County, Alabama, will be of interest to historians not only for the light shed upon the life of the Confederate soldier, but also for frequent allusions to rural life and the operation of the farm in Cotton's absence. He enlisted at Pinckneyville, Alabama, on April 1, 1862, and was paroled at Talladega on May 25, 1865. During the intervening years he saw action in Tennessee and Kentucky, in the Dalton-Atlanta campaign, briefly again in Tennessee, then in Georgia against the forces of Sherman, moving finally into South Carolina.... These letters constitute an authentic record of a typical Confederate soldier's experience," ---Journal of Southern History
