Book Description
Excerpt from The True History of the Civil War The burden of authorship is indeed heavy, but the responsibility of title-making is insupportable. Therefore, while I bear the onus that may fall upon me because of the contents of this book, I leave to my publishers the credit - or the blame that may come from the title which they have selected. Presumptuous, no doubt, I am to attempt to crowd within the space at my command a his tory of the Civil War, but, believe me, to my sins of commission cannot be added that of arrogantly assuming that this book of mine is the only true history of the war between the States. Indeed, so clearly do I recognize the futility of such a claim, that here, in all humility and gratitude, I express my obligations to the distinguished historians and the score and more of patient students whose re searches have made my work the easier, as well as to those persons who have placed at my disposal the original sources upon which I in great part rely; and I am especially indebted to W. R. Gar rett, oi Nashville, Oakley P. Haines, of Baltimore, and Alfred Brittain, of Newark, not only for their kindness in reading the proof of this volume, but for the many helpful suggestions made by them. History of the Civil War: 1861-1865 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Civil War: 1861-1865 This is not an abridgment of my three volumes on the Civil War but a fresh study of the subject in which I have used my work as one of many authorities. Whenever I have transferred sentences, paragraphs and pages, I have done so because, after a study of the original authorities, I found that I could give my conclusions no better than in my first work. Since writing the three volumes, published respectively in 1895, 1899 and 1904, much new original material has come to light and valuable treatments of certain periods of the Civil War have appeared. I owe especial indebtedness to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies; Diary of Gideon Welles; Life of Rawlins, which J. H. Wilson kindly permitted me to read in manuscript before publication; the Letters and Diaries of John Hay; Miss Nicolay's Personal Traits of Lincoln; Life and Letters of General Meade; W. R. Livermore, Story of the Civil War; J. Bigelow, Jr., The Campaign of Chancellorsville; W. R. Thayer, Life of John Hay; The Reminiscences of Carl Schurz. I owe a literary revision of this volume to my son, Daniel P. Rhodes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Civil War in America, Vol. 1 It would have been unbecoming in me to argue upon contro verted questions, national, political, or military, upon which, after careful investigation and mature deliberation, the author has expressed himself decidedly. Least of all have I considered it within my province to say a word as to his estimates of individuals and their relations to the government. He has himself said that his history was written for European readers, who desire to know only his impressions and conclusions. But the book will be largely read in this country by people more capable of judging its facts and its philosophy. Book Description
Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War The mountaineers did me the honor to elect me their captain. It was the first Office I had ever held, and I verily believed it would be the last; for I expected to fight with these men till the war ended or until I should be killed. Our first decision was to mount and go as cavalry. We had not then learned, as we did later, the full meaning of that war-song, If you want to have a good time, jine the cavalry; but like most Southerners we were inured to horseback, and all preferred that great arm Of the service. This company Of mounted men was organized as soon as a conflict seemed probable and prior to any call for volunteers. They were doomed to a disappointment, NO cavalry now needed was the laconic and stunning reply to the Offer Of our services. What was to be done, was the perplexing question. The proposition to wait until mounted men were needed was promptly negatived by the suggestion that we were SO far from any point where a battle was likely to occur, and so hidden from view by the surrounding mountains, that we might be forgotten and the war might end before we had a chance. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Civil War in America, Vol. 4 The volume now presented to the American reader contains, without abridgment, the seventh volume of the French Edition, and so much of the eighth volume as was contained in the manu script which the distinguished Author carried with him when he was banished from France. Previous to the promulgation of the decree of banishment a speedy completion of the work was hoped for, but political reslmnsibilities, and an enforced absence from the collection of books and manuscripts at Chateau d'eu relating to the Civil \var of 1861 - 65, have not justified this.
