Innovative Community Responses to Disaster

Innovative Community Responses to Disaster PDF Author: Brent D. Hales
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317441036
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 204

Book Description
Increasingly, community leaders around the world face major natural and economic disasters that require them to find ways to rebuild both physical infrastructure and the local economy. Doing this effectively requires an understanding of how various parts of the community are interconnected, as well as information as to which revitalization approaches have succeeded in the past. Community investment in recovery is essential and, in some cases, may require local leaders to rethink how it can be financed and arranged. This book presents a conceptual framework based on the community capitals, and describes approaches that have succeeded in situations where local leaders have coordinated efforts to rebuild and revitalize local conditions. Contributions provide examples of successful approaches around the world, thus analysing potential strategies for addressing disasters of many different types in various cultural settings. In this way, the book provides insights into a variety of approaches based on applications of accepted community development theory and concepts. This book was originally published as a special issue of Community Development.

Now What?

Now What? PDF Author: Larry Tramutola
Publisher: Hillcrest Publishing Group
ISBN: 1935204866
Category : Political Science

Pages : 208

Book Description
Effective elected leaders can make a huge difference in their communities; conversely those elected who are ineffective can create significant and long term problems. The point of this book is to identify common problems that elected officials face during their service, and offer practical solutions. Since we rarely elect "perfect leaders," our democratic system is structured so ordinary citizens can become successful as long as they work at it. Interestingly, the people who find the greatest success as public officials are those who quickly pivot their attention from "Me" to "We," develop effective relationships with their colleagues, and listen more and talk less.

Profile of an Effective School Superintendent

Profile of an Effective School Superintendent PDF Author: Dale Boddy

Book Description
ABOUT THE INFORMANT Ed Noyce, the informant or subject of this field study, was the Superintendent of the Wapiti Falls School District in 1994. Pseudonyms are used throughout his story, but he is real and so are the people, events, and locations herein. Why Ed Noyce? Ed was identified by an expert panel as an effective school superintendent. Asked for his comments, the real Ed Noyce wrote: “I am also grateful to those staff members, school board members, and others who agreed to participate. It can be quite threatening to have an unknown observer attending meetings at which private feelings and opinions are being shared. Yet, to the best of my recollection, no one showed even the slightest hesitation having an unknown observer recording their every move. The researcher deserves much credit for the way he managed to put others at ease.” ABOUT THE ETHNOLOGY Naturalistic observations were collected, digested, collated, and curated to provide a cultural portrait. The purpose was to better understand superintendent leadership. Three key attributes common to all leaders—spending sufficient time on the job, focusing on key attributes of the organization’s mission, and respecting the individuals serving within the organization— were used and individualized for our informant. Everyday encounters are described in detail. Follow along as Ed applied his core strengths and attributes in leading district staff, students, elected officials, and community. Leadership strategies are enumerated and validated in two case studies. In one, Ed and his district faced a crisis which tested elected officials, teachers, administrators, and finally Ed. Inner strengths were revealed; strengths attributed to work-life balance. Leadership will always be complex. Hence no all-encompassing theory of leadership will be offered. In this cultural portrait the premises held to be true are threefold: watch, reflect, improve.
