Book Description
Excerpt from The Church Quarterly Review, Vol. 57: For October, 1903 January, 1904 In this connection we should like to quote also some very weighty words of Canon Newbolt and Mr. Darwell Stone in their important pamphlet on The Church of England: The English Church voices to us the Catholic Church, appeals to us in clear tones, emphasizing a definite position, claims to have made such alterations, as were made, with a certain end in view, with her eye on the primitive Church, and with a determina tion to preserve all laudable practices of the whole Catholic Church. Our dificulties arise now from the fact that this attitude is not accepted, and that in its place has arisen the dangerous and anomalous contention that the English Church, or rather the Church in England, is committed to an untenable position that she only represents so many dioceses of the Western Church, and may well be arraigned on the charge of schism. Therefore it is the duty of all those who owe allegiance to the Catholic Church, to ignore all the peculiarities and crotchets of a pseudo-anglicanism, and to take advantage of troublous times to make a series of expeditions into the regions of pure Catholicism, and annex privately such portions of the heritage as those who live in England seem to have been deprived Of, to dwell in them, to Obtain squatters' rights, and then at last, by persistence and threats, to obtain Episcopal recognition and public toleration for their annexations. The result of this policy has been and must be disastrous; in grasping at the shadow of Catholic privileges, we have lost the essential principle of Catholicism, Obedience to authority. Book Description
Excerpt from The Church Quarterly Review, Vol. 53: For October 1901: January 1902 Such an attitude naturally builds up an equally deter mined attitude ou the other side. Anyone who is a firm believer in the truth of certain Opinions naturally resents an attack which is often virulent and unrelenting. He is told that it is only the outworks or the excrescences of his faith which are in danger; but the attacks are obviously and clearly directed against all that he holds to be essential. He is not prejudiced in favour of criticism, and when he comes to examine it he finds that, although it is quite convinced that most things should be disbelieved, it is not always agreed on the reason for disbelieving. He finds that the same critics who condemn his beliefs are equally confident in con demning the opinions of their predecessors, who in their day attacked established opinions with just the same self confidence. He begins to wonder, therefore, whether the present phase of criticism may not equally rapidly pass away. He has read Harnack's condemnation of the Tiibingen school. He remembers that there was a time, not so long ago, when he waslooked upon as inadequately endowed with intelligence because he dissented from its conclusions, and he begins to wonder whether some future critic will not speak as contemptuously of later destructive criticism. He sees how little constructive theology, how little that satisfies the needs of a man's soul and will be a guide to his life, criticism can give. He knows that the world requires a Gospel and so he hardcns his heart and stops his ears, and is resolved to hold tenaciously to what he has received, without taking the trouble to test or to correct it, and he uses the old-fashioned weapons of orthodoxy and anathema tizes the heretic. The Church of England 1688-1832

The Church of England 1688-1832 PDF Author: Dr William Gibson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113455205X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 277

Book Description
A wide ranging new history of a key period in the history of the church in England, from the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688-89 to the Great Reform Act of 1832. This was a tumultuous time for both church and state, when the relationship between religion and politics was at its most fraught. This book presents evidence of the widespread Anglican commitment to harmony between those of differing religious views and suggests that High and Low Churchmanship was less divergent than usually assumed.
