Book Description
Excerpt from The Church of England Pulpit, and Ecclesiastical Review, Vol. 35: January to June, 1893 Ach time that a familiar face disappears from among us, each time we are told of a friend or a neighbour that his voice can be heard among us no more, we must, if we ourselves are going down hill in the journey of life, feel that our turn for disappearance must soon come. A few more struggles here, a few more partings o'er, and then we ourselves shall become a memory to those whom we have loved, or who have loved us. In almost all cases the thought of those who have gone before us becomes more tender than the feeling which we had for them while they were here. We dwell on all the good that we have seen in them, while their faults, their mistakes, their wrong doings become constantly more faint, if they are not forgotten altogether. Book Description
Excerpt from The Church of England Pulpit, and Ecclesiastical Review, Vol. 23: January to June, 1887 Sir, - I beg leave to submit a few observations on the reference made by Mr. Edmund Lawrence to my comments on his previous communication. He says his ideas and mine rather traverse than contradict each other. It seems to me that his anticipations as to the destinies of the intelligent creation differ from mine nearly as much as light differs from darkness, unless I have misunderstood his meaning. He believes that the universe will, during interminable ages, present a chequered scene of the most painful contrasts which the imagination can 'portray; as there is nothing more repugnant than the idea of rapturous gaiety or pompous luxury, in the vicinity of squalid poverty, starvation, madness, or crime. I believe, on the con trary, that all the races brought into existence through out the boundless extent of the universe, will be trained for immortality by methods that shall reveal. With increasing glory the grand attributes of the Deity, and that not a single individual will be aban doued to remediless darkness, depravity, and misery. I believe the first fruits of His creatures - the elect -the chosenl - the real Church of the Living God will in all regions of intelligent life, and throughout the infinite series of ages, have an active participation in the grand measures of universal good. Book Description
Excerpt from The Church of England Pulpit, and Ecclesiastical Review, Vol. 22: July to December, 1886 But states, empires, kingdoms, and nations are not immortal. They have their rises, and their declines, and their falls. After a time, many of them go out of existence altogether; and only a few' mouldering ruins remain to Show that they have been. SO may it happen to this ancient kingdom, this great nation, this splendid empire Of ours, on which it has been said too boastfully that the sun never sets. There is no promise given that the gates of the dead world shall never close on this. Other empires, kingdoms, nations have perished. The Egypt of the Pharaohs is gone, leaving only mouldering pyramids and tem ples; and the embalmed bodies of the kings them selves are curiosities in museums - the worst in dignity that can be offered to poor mortality. The Rome of the Caesars is gone also, though the principles of their law, being founded on teternal justice, live on. And when these, and many another noble nation and empire have perished, how can we expect the England of the He'nries, and the Edwards, and the Georges, and of Victoria, to live for ever. Some nations have been destroyed by violence from outside: others by treachery from within some have perished by internal cor ruption and decay: some have been wrecked by rash pilotage: while some have committed sui cide, like human beings, long before their proper time.
