Selfie Democracy

Selfie Democracy PDF Author: Elizabeth Losh
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262047055
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 370

Book Description
How politicians’ digital strategies appeal to the same fantasies of digital connection, access, and participation peddled by Silicon Valley. Smartphones and other digital devices seem to give us a direct line to politicians. But is interacting with presidential tweets really a manifestation of digital democracy? In Selfie Democracy, Elizabeth Losh examines the unintended consequences of politicians’ digital strategies, from the Obama campaign’s pioneering construction of an online community to Trump’s Twitter dominance. She finds that politicians who use digital media appeal to the same fantasies of digital connection, access, and participation peddled by Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, smartphones and social media don’t enable participatory democracy so much as they incentivize citizens to perform attention-getting acts of political expression. Losh explores presidential rhetoric casting digital media as tools of democracy, describes the conflation of gender and technology that contributed to Hillary Clinton’s defeat in 2016, chronicles the Biden campaign’s early digital stumbles in 2020, and recounts the TikTok campaign that may have spoiled a Trump rally. She shows that although Obama and Trump may seem diametrically opposed in both style and substance, they both used mobile digital media in ways that reshaped the presidency and promised a new kind of digital democracy. Obama used data and digital media to connect to citizens without intermediaries; Trump followed this strategy to its most extreme conclusion. What were the January 6 insurrectionists doing, as they livestreamed themselves and their cohorts attacking the Capitol, but practicing their own brand of selfie democracy?

Book Description
I normally hate Christmas. Until I meet a gorgeous Australian guy who tries to change my mind… Two weeks before Christmas, I lose my job and my apartment in London. Now my best friend’s no-good cheating boyfriend has left her with a non-refundable plane ticket she can’t afford. So I do what any good friend would do and use my redundancy payout to buy Shona’s ticket and board a flight to Australia, where I plan to forget that Christmas even exists. Except I soon discover that the festive spirit is alive and well in beachside Sydney—only it looks completely different. When I receive an unexpected invitation to Christmas lunch from a gorgeous surfer guy I keep bumping into, I’m tempted. But I’d be mad to have a fling with a single father like Jaz who has enough personal baggage to make my oversized suitcase feel feather light. Then again, holiday romances aren’t supposed to last…are they?

Shortest Way Home: One Mayor's Challenge and a Model for America's Future

Shortest Way Home: One Mayor's Challenge and a Model for America's Future PDF Author: Pete Buttigieg
Publisher: Liveright Publishing
ISBN: 1631494376
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 407

Book Description
Featuring a new introduction and a “Back Home” afterword, Shortest Way Home is Pete Buttigieg’s inspirational story that challenges our perception of the typical American politician. The meteoric rise of the mayor of a small Midwest city, who defied every pundit’s odds with his electrifying run for the presidency, created one of the most surprising candidacies in recent American history. The fact that his New York Times best-selling memoir, Shortest Way Home, didn’t read like your typical campaign book only added to “Mayor Pete’s” transcendent appeal. Readers everywhere, old and young, came to appreciate the “stirring, honest, and often beautiful” (Jill Lepore, New Yorker) personal stories and gripping mayoral tales, which provided, in lyrical prose, the political and philosophical foundations of his historic campaign. Now featuring a new introduction and a “Back Home” afterword, in which Buttigieg movingly returns with the reader to his roots in his hometown city of South Bend, Indiana, as well as a transcript of the eulogy for his father, Joseph Buttigieg, Shortest Way Home, already considered a classic of the political memoir form, provides us with a beacon of hope at a time of social despair and political crisis.
