Book Description
Excerpt from The Christian in Social Relationships This command still stands. The Christian must be con cerned with education - his own and that of other persons. A man was once heard to remark that education was a purely secular affair, that the church had no concern with it, and that an educated ministry would mark the decline of the ministry. Does such a position rightly interpret the mind of Christ? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Christianity Applied to Our Civil and Social Relations The following discourses are not a connected series, though all of them aim at the same principle. As they touch upon subjects of agitating interest, and have occassioned severe strictures, it is thought best to give them.to the public in their original form. The author has a high esteem for many who differ from him respecting the most Christian way of treating certain subjects tending to alienations in church and state, especially masonry and slavery But it is hoped that we all have in view the same good object; let us then speak out our views freely and in love. Now that the excitement of the moment is over, if, on reading and calmly pondering the sentiments of these discourses, any Christian brethren are justly grieved or offended, none will more regret it than the author, by whom, with fervent prayer for the divine blessing upon them, they are presented to the public. Book Description
Excerpt from Social Christianity For many years I have obstinately resisted the importunity of valued friends who have urged me to publish a volume of sermons. I have not deemed any utterance of mine worthy permanent record. My too busy life affords no time for theological or literary elaboration. But of late the pressure to publish has greatly increased. Above all, it has come to my knowledge that several young Agnostics have been brought to Christ by reading some of the following sermons, which appeared in The Methodist Times. If the Divine Father is pleased to use me thus to bring back to Himself any of my wandering brothers, I dare not consult my own taste or preference any longer. And now that the Rubicon is crossed, I am comforted by the fact that, although the literary form of this volume must bear all the marks of haste inseparable from a very active and varied ministry, the exposition of Christianity which it contains is the slow fruit of a lifetime of observation, reflection, and experience. Book Description
Excerpt from The Christian Society The church was not sent to be an institu tional dominion, but a sacrificial and redemp tive life in the world. Yet the church is not engaged in sacrifice and redemption, so much as in artificial organization; not engaged in discerning and teaching right from wrong, so much as in definition of doctrines. The anal ogy between Protestant Christendom in rela tion to its mission of social redemption, and the relation of the Jewish church to the first appearance of the Son of God, is true. I am haunted continually with the vision of the liv ing Jesus weeping over our majestic temples of worship, our halls of theology, our conven tions of religion, as though he were again in the sacred sorrow of that weeping over Jerusa lem, his heart again broken because' only the remnant may receive the mission which the institution rejects.but, whatever be the form in which they are destined to be shaped, the work which the Christian societies, as socie ties, have to do, in the days that are to come, is not inferior to any work which has lain before them at any epoch of their history. For the air is charged with thunder, and the times that are coming may be times of storm. There are phe nomena beneath the surface of society of which it would be hardly possible to overrate the significance. There is a widen ing separation of class from class: there is a growing social strain: there is a disturbance of the political equilibrium there is the rise of an educated proletariat. To the problems which these phenomena suggest Christianity has the key. Its unaccomplished mission is to reconstruct society on the basis of brotherhood. To you and me and men like ourselves is committed, in these anxious days, that which is at once an awful responsibility and a splendid destiny - to transform this modern world into a Christian society, to change the socialism which is based on the assumption of clashing interests into the socialism which is based on the sense of spiritual union, and to gather together the scattered forces of a divided Christendom into a confederation in which organization will be of less account than fellowship with one Spirit and faith in one Lord - into a communion wide as human life and deep as human need - into a Church which shall outshine even the golden glory of its dawn by the splendor of its eternal noon. The Social Principles of Jesus (Classic Reprint)

The Social Principles of Jesus (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Walter Rauschenbusch
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780365278764
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 212

Book Description
Excerpt from The Social Principles of Jesus This book is not a life of Christ, nor an exposition of his religious teachings, nor a doctrinal statement about his per son and work. It is an attempt to formulate in simple proposi tions the fundamental convictions of Jesus about the social and ethical relations and duties of men. Our generation is profoundly troubled by the problems of organized society. The most active interest of serious men and women in the colleges is concentrated on them. We know that we are in deep need of moral light and spiritual inspiration in our gropings. There is an increasing realiza tion, too, that the salvation of society lies in the direction toward which Jesus led. And yet there is no Clear under standing of what he stood for. Those who have grown up under Christian teaching can sum up the doctrines of the Church readily, but the principles which we must under stand if we are to follow Jesus in the way of life, seem enveloped in a haze. The ordinary man sees clearly only Christ's law of love and the golden rule. This book seeks to bring to a point what we all vaguely know. The Church and the Social Problem PDF Author: Samuel Plantz

ISBN: 9781330934982
Category : History

Pages : 362

Book Description
Excerpt from The Church and the Social Problem: A Study in Applied Christianity This volume is written with the conviction that the Christian Church of the twentieth century faces a crisis of the utmost importance; and that it can only meet the needs of the age by adapting its teaching and methods of work to the peculiar conditions of our times. This fact has been often pointed out during the past few years by men of masterly power, but it must be confessed that few of the workers in the Church have heard the call and earnestly assumed the task of applying Christian principles to the social problems of our modern life. Many pulpits seem stereotyped in thought and utterance, and many Churches cemented in the forms of their activity. While this condition pertains, there is a demand for the multiplication of literature on Christian Ethics, and the application of the Gospel to society.
