The theme has been regarded and treated primarily as a subject of investigation. I have accordingly approached it from the historical side, and have aimed to state the problems to be considered and to define my positions respecting them in an historical and inductive method. I have tried to judge the various Opinions reviewed and to test my own by means of the fundamental Christian concepts of God and of man. The treatment has been made as objective as possible. It has been my aim to describe and estimate conflicting theories with fairness. My own judgments, with the reasons for them, have been frankly given. It is not to be expected, of course, that they will commend them selves to the acceptance of all readers, but I trust that those who may dissent from them may still find some thing in the book by which they may be interested or instructed. There is always some kind Of strain or tension between man and his environment, and man has always an interest in overcoming the strain, in re solving the discord in his situation into a harmony, in getting the environment to be his ally rather than his adversary. The process by which his end is attained may be described 'as one of reconciliation, but whether the reconciliation is adequate depends on whether his conception Of the environ ment is equal to the truth. Men may be very dimly and imperfectly conscious of the nature Of the strain which dis quiets their life, and may seek to Overcome it in blind and insufficient ways. Excerpt from Salvation From Sin, the End of Christian Faith In denying that the Old Testament saints were born of God, we must not be understood as denying that they had any religion. It appears by the passage above quoted, that there are two dis tinct stages in religious experience, in the first of which men may properly be called servants of God, while yet they are not sons. It is important that this distinction should be clearly seen, and constantly kept in view. We admit, and teach, that the Old Testament saints were servants of God in the ages before Christ, and that they became sons at his coming. But what is the difference between servants and sons? Did not the Old Testament saints love God Yes and so many servants love and honor their masters, while yet there is no vital union, no blood-relationship between them. So there was no vital union between God and man, till Christ came in the flesh. Abraham was called the friend of God, and he doubtless loved God as a man loves his friend but it is not said in scripture, and it is not true, that Christ was in him that he dwelt in God, and God in him. This spiritual indwelling was hid from ages and from generations, and was manifested only after the mission of Christ. Col. 1 26, 27. It is this that brings men into blood-relationship to God, so that they are entitled to the name of sons of God.
