Excerpt from The Children's Story of the War, Vol. 2: From the Battle of Mons to the Fall of Antwerp When the young soldier arrives at the barracks he is given three suits of clothes, one of which is his drill dress, another his walking-out dress, and the third his war dress. These clothes he keeps on a shelf above his bed, and he so arranges his garments that the French colours, blue, white, and red, are clearly seen. In summer he rises at 4 a.m., and in winter at 6 a.m., and he goes to bed at 9 p.m. All the year round, except when he is on sentry-go, or has permission to stay out late. Every day the barrack-room is inspected, to see that. The beds are properly made, that the men's clothes are in good order, and that the room is clean and tidy. The little breakfast, which consists of coffee and a roll, is served at 5 a.m.; lunch is eaten at ten o'clock, and dinner at five. The meals usually consist of soup, meat, vegetables, and fruit. On great occa sions wine is supplied, and cigars are handed round. The conscript's pay consists of one sou (a halfpenny) a day, and his tobacco. Some of the men receive money from their parents and friends others have to make shift on the trifling allowance which the Government gives them. Excerpt from The Children's Story of the War, Vol. 7: The First Seven Months of the Year 1917 Austrian troops push into Russia and hold the Russians in check until France was utterly crushed. The business of beating France to the ground would not, she felt sure, take long. The German navy was to help. It was to bombard the ports of Northern France, and make feints of landing troops, so as' to distract the attention of the French generals and cause them to disperse their forces. Other naval opera tions in the Mediterranean would prevent African troops from being brought to the help of France. Meanwhile the vast German armies would deploy through Belgium, and then in a mighty encircling line sweep southward and make an end of the French. Such was the German plan, and had France and Russia alone been her foes, she would very likely have carried out her programme. But as soon as it became apparent that Germany had torn up another scrap of paper, and had broken her plighted word to Belgium, Great Britain, the mightiest naval power in the world, threw down the gage of battle. At once the naval schemes of Germany were reduced to naught. Within two hours of Britain's declaration of war her cruisers were off the German ports. The German fleet was contained; it dared not issue forth in face of the overwhelming odds arrayed against it. At one stroke the German navy was rendered powerless, and thereafter for twenty-one months it refused to come out in force and abide the issue of battle. When Britain entered the war there was an outburst of fury in Germany, and for the first time the Germans knew that they were not going to have a walk-over. But they had already gone too far to draw back. Their forces were already in France and Belgium. Their plan of campaign was already in progress. They meant to stand on the defensive in Alsace, and throw forward their right wing to swing like a gate through Belgium and France, so as to encircle the French armies and thus destroy them or force them into surrender. When the Belgians, to their eternal honour, refused to allow the German troops free passage through their country, a warfare which they had not expected was forced upon them at the outset. They had to hack their way through a country in which they believed that they would meet with no resistance. In August 1914 we were only an insignificant military power, and the Germans were quite justified in believ ing that we should play but a small part in the land fighting. It is true that the small army of Six divisions which we sent abroad at the outset of the war was composed Of the most highly trained soldiers in the world; but had it been com posed of Samsons, it could not have turned the scale against the millions which the Germans were able to array for their great adventure. Nevertheless this little force gave backbone to the French resistance, and made a fighting retreat which will go down to history as one Of the finest feats of warfare. Despite, its losses and its weariness, it was ready, when the hour struck, to push forward and play its part in forcing the Germans to withdraw to the Aisne and begin that trench fight ing which was the beginning of the end.
