Excerpt from The Charlotte Medical Journal, Vol. 30: A Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery; January-June, 1907 Case 3. - Young man, age seventeen years, was stricken a severe blow with base ball bat, producing an ugly depressed frac ture of the skull; was brought to my hos pital in a semi - conscious condition; had convulsions just after receiving blow. I removed several large pieces of the skull that were driven through the dura-mater, necessitating a few sutures in the much lacerated membrane. There was consider able oozing from the dura-mater, and fear ing that it would trickle down between the membrane and the skull I placed gauze drainage over the raw surface before bring ing the aps together. There was a free discharge for sixty hours of bloody serum. The drainage was removed; union by first intention; recovery complete in three weeks.
