The Characteristics of a Laminar Boundary Layer on a Spinning Tangent Ogive Cylinder at Angle of Attack

The Characteristics of a Laminar Boundary Layer on a Spinning Tangent Ogive Cylinder at Angle of Attack PDF Author: H. R. Vaughn

Book Description
Streamwise velocity profiles of a laminar boundary layer were determined from pitot pressure measurements made in a supersonic wind tunnel on a spinning tangent ogive cylinder at zero and four degrees angle of attack. A transformation was found which transforms the velocity profiles to be in agreement with the incompressible Blasius profile.

Boundary Layer Studies on a Spinning Tangent-oglive-cylinder Model

Boundary Layer Studies on a Spinning Tangent-oglive-cylinder Model PDF Author: Walter B. Sturek

Book Description
An experimental investigation of the Magnus effect on a seven caliber tangent-ogive-cylinder model in supersonic flow is reported. The effects of surface spin, angle of attack and Mach number on boundary-layer transition have been studied using spark shadowgraphs of the flow. These shadowgraphs were taken while the model was mounted on offset struts to enable views to be obtained of the flow completely about the circumference of the model. The Magnus and normal forces were measured using the strain-gage balance technique for different boundary layer configurations. These measurements revealed a substantial sensitivity of Magnus force to the boundary layer configuration. A preliminary comparison of the Magnus measurements to the theory of Vaughn and Reis yielded poor agreement. The data have been tabulated to facilitate their use in the evaluation of proposed theoretical models of the Magnus effect.

Magnus Characteristics of Arbitrary Rotating Bodies

Magnus Characteristics of Arbitrary Rotating Bodies PDF Author: I. D. Jacobson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Ballistics
Languages : en
Pages : 72

Book Description
The report reviews both theoretical and experimental investigations of the Magnus effect on arbitrary bodies of revolution. The main emphasis is on spinning projectiles at angle of attack, both with and without fins. Flow visualization measurements are used to assess the accuracy of the existing theories. Laminar, turbulent, and mixed boundary layers are considered. (Author).

An Experimental Investigation of the Laminar Boundary Layer on a Spinning Ogive Cylinder in Supersonic Flow

An Experimental Investigation of the Laminar Boundary Layer on a Spinning Ogive Cylinder in Supersonic Flow PDF Author: William C. Ragsdale
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Laminar boundary layer
Languages : en
Pages : 160

Book Description
Pitot pressure surveys were made of the laminar boundary layer on an ogive-cylinder model at Mach 3.02 and 4.10. Surveys were made at five stations along the model, at angles of attack of zero and four degrees, with and without spin. Tests with spin were performed at Mach 3.02. The pitot pressure data has been used to compute boundary-layer velocity profiles, and results from two data-reduction procedures are presented. Some comparisons are made with theoretical velocity profiles for the zero spin, zero angle-of-attack case. (Author).

Preliminary Surveys of the Three Dimensional Boundary Layer on a Yawed, Spinning Body of Revolution

Preliminary Surveys of the Three Dimensional Boundary Layer on a Yawed, Spinning Body of Revolution PDF Author: Walter B. Sturek

Category : Body of revolution

Pages : 38

Book Description
Experimental measurements of the three dimensional boundary layer on a yawed, spinning tangent-ogive-cylinder model in supersonic flow are reported. The measurements were made using a flattened total head probe at one axial station near the base of the model for 10 azimuthal stations about the circumference. The test conditions were: M = 3, angle of attack = 4 deg, omega = 0 and 10,000 RPM. The trends observed in comparing measurements with and without the model spinning were: (1) the boundary layer is more thick and less full where surface spin opposes the crossflow velocity; and (2) the boundary layer is less thick and more full where surface spin is in the same direction as the crossflow velocity. (Author).
