Book Description
Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 19: December, 1962 IN a growing number of Chris tian communities the Advent wreath has become a standard fea ture of the services held during the weeks before Christmas. Four can dles constitute part of such an ar rangement. The first one is lit on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. This is done at the beginning of the worship service in connection with the lighting of the altar candles. On the following Sunday two candles are lit as a reminder that Christmas is just a few weeks away. Each Sunday another candle is illuminated to connote the approach of the Feast of the Incarnation. The Protestant Women of the Chapel could well undertake the making of such an Advent wreath as their December project. It should be made to fit the top of a table (approximately 4x4) to be set up next to the lectern as a symbolic re minder that the Scripture readings and the sermons for these weeks are devoted specifically to the theme of preparing properly for the celebra tion of Christmas. Book Description
Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 20: October, 1963 Copies of two very interesting manuscripts have been received by the General Commission's library. One, written several years ago by Dr. James 0. Henry of Biola College, concerns the Christian Commission, an agency of Protestant organizations and individuals who served the Union troops during the Civil War. The YMCA was prominent in the sponsorship of the Christian Commission. An im pressive amount of assistance was gathered and distributed to meet the religious and physical needs of military personnel. The govern ment was not equipped to provide the wide range of services and supplies which are an accepted part of present-day logistics for the armed forces. The problems of organizing the Christian Commission's civilian relief effort on behalf of the military are given in considerable detail by Dr. Henry. There are informative parallels in any attempt on the part of religious groups to establish an effective working relationship with the United States government. The second manuscript, dated 1963, also a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for a graduate degree, con cerns The In uence of the American Protestant Churches on the Development of the Structure and Duties of the Army Chaplaincy, 1914 This was written by Chaplain (capt) Edward A. Simon, usa. Chaplain Simon was given access to certain records of the General Commission to which he makes reference in citing his sources of information. It is instructive to read of early attempts to accomplish the mission of the Chaplaincy under simple forms and by variations from the present structure. The role of the churches in improving the quality of the religious program in the Army is im pressive. Chaplain Simon deals in a careful and objective manner with the points and periods of criticism in the history of the Chaplaincy. This is a very timely subject since church-state relations are being re-examined by both the courts and the churches at present. It is unfortunate that these two manuscripts are not in print, since they deal with the record of very informative precedents and experiences regarding the military, the Chaplaincy, and the churches.
