Transmission of Financial Crises and Contagion:

Transmission of Financial Crises and Contagion: PDF Author: Mardi Dungey
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199842604
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
Financial crises often transmit across geographical borders and different asset classes. Modeling these interactions is empirically challenging, and many of the proposed methods give different results when applied to the same data sets. In this book the authors set out their work on a general framework for modeling the transmission of financial crises using latent factor models. They show how their framework encompasses a number of other empirical contagion models and why the results between the models differ. The book builds a framework which begins from considering contagion in the bond markets during 1997-1998 across a number of countries, and culminates in a model which encompasses multiple assets across multiple countries through over a decade of crisis events from East Asia in 1997-1998 to the sub prime crisis during 2008. Program code to support implementation of similar models is available.

Understanding Financial Interconnectedness

Understanding Financial Interconnectedness PDF Author: International Monetary Fund. Strategy, Policy, & Review Department
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1498336752
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 45

Book Description
This paper seeks to advance our understanding of global financial interconnectedness by (i) mapping aspects of the architecture of global finance and (ii) investigating critical fault lines related to interconnectedness along which systemic risks were built up and shocks transmitted in the crisis. It thus takes initial steps toward operationalizing enhanced financial sector and macro-financial surveillance called for by the IMF’s Executive Board and by experts such as de Larosiere et al. (2009). Getting a better handle on interconnectedness would strengthen the Fund‘s ability, together with the Financial Stability Board, to track systemic risk concentrations. It would also inform spillover and vulnerability analyses, and sharpen bilateral and multilateral surveillance.

ISBN: 1463525893
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 123

Book Description
"Buy low, sell high" is likely the most widely quoted financial market truth of all time. It makes so much sense, yet it is one of the most difficult tasks to repeat successfully when investing. Risk, Financial Markets & You offers a unique examination of the hurdles investors must overcome to make successful investment decisions. Alan Fustey, a 25-year financial industry veteran, provides insightful revelations that challenge investing convention and divulge the hidden decision making weaknesses present in every investor. He examines: - How our engrained mental biases make us prone to producing unconscious errors. - Why we struggle to understand probability and overestimate the likelihood of favourable investment results. - If we truly understand the real risk that is present in financial markets. - How the financial advice industry uses our decision making weaknesses to their advantage when they present information, make recommendations and charge for their services. - Why we perceive financial markets as being more predictable than they actually are and subsequently suffer as investors. Risk, Financial Markets & You is thoroughly researched and insightfully written. Fustey draws lessons and offers practical solutions that will benefit even the most experienced investors. He combines anecdotes of investing mistakes to create an entertaining account of how investors can triumph over themselves and the financial advice industry to create investment success.

Iceland

Iceland PDF Author: International Monetary Fund. Monetary and Capital Markets Department
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 119

Book Description
The FSAP took place against the background of a strengthened financial sector in Iceland amid heightened uncertainty in the global economy. The Icelandic financial landscape has undergone significant structural transformation since the global financial crisis with a contracted banking sector. The banking sector has deleveraged swiftly and curtailed cross-border exposure since the GFC with asset reduced from ten times of GDP to 410 percent of GDP from 2007 to 2022Q3, while pension funds have gained systemic importance with assets at 176 percent of GDP2 as of end-2022 with large holdings of public debt and close ties with the banking system. The financial system has also weathered the global pandemic on the back of strong fundamentals, while leaving uneven sectoral impact across the economy. Nonetheless, the intensified fragmentation of the global economy coupled with continued tightening of financial condition and volatile market sentiment has amplified the downside risks which may prompt knock-on effects on the Icelandic economy and financial sector going forward.

Following the Money

Following the Money PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309048834
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
Many questions have been raised about America's status in the increasingly interconnected global economy. Yet key factsâ€"such as the amount of foreign assets abroad owned by U.S. citizensâ€"are not known. The crucial data needed to assess the U.S. position are unavailable. This volume explores significant shortcomings in U.S. data on international capital transactions and their implications for policymakers. The volume offers clearcut recommendations for U.S. agencies to bring data collection and analyses of the global economy into the twenty-first century. The volume explores: How factors emerging since the early 1980s have shaped world financial markets and revealed shortcomings in data collection and analysis. How the existing U.S. data system works and where it fails how measurements of international financial transactions are recorded; and how swaps, options, and futures present special reporting problems. How alternative methods, such as collecting data, from sources such as global custodians and international clearinghouses, might improve coverage and accuracy.
