Book Description
Excerpt from The Century, Vol. 27: Illustrated Monthly Magazine; November 1883 to April 1884 The trumpet sounds a second time, and the door of the toril, the dark cage on wheels in which the bull is confined, is Opened, and the bull rushes out. He is also an amateur, a two-year-old, of good lineage like his tormen tors, but of imperfect development. He has been exasperated by confinement in a dark box, and pricked into a rage by an ornamented rosette of ribbons, which is fastened between his shoulders by spikes that have drawn blood. Astonished at first by the glare of light and the noisy welcome Of the assembly, he stands a moment confused, and then runs about the arena looking for some place of escape. He is a compact, clean-built, intrepid little fellow, and probably does not at first comprehend that this is a duel for life, without a Single chance for himself. He does not yet know that he is to be stabbed and pricked and baited for an hour for the amusement of these gracious, applauding ladies, and then butch ered, to give them a holiday sensation. He does not know how unequal the fight is to be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, Vol. 29: November 1884 to April 1885 For all that, Mr. Fitzgerald's own version affords quite sufficient excuse for any one to read into Omar's Rubaiyat an interpretation which would make a mask Where Mr. Fitz gerald sees a face, and a face where he sees a mask. Indeed, one may safely question his own or his neighbor's western way of reading an Oriental poem, and accept the possibility that they are all merely using an antique coin as an instrument of exchange. In the days between 1860 and 1878, when the Camerons left for Ceylon, Mrs. Cameron was almost as famous and well-known a figure in Freshwater as Tennyson himself.
