Conflict Areas in the Caucasus and Central Asia PDF Author: Arda Özkan
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1793651264
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 469

Book Description
The Caucasus region and Central Asia covers a large part of the Eurasian. Both regions, where Russia and China have a serious influence and visibility, also have a location that reflects the hegemonic expectations of both these actors. In this context, domestic political developments and even internal conflicts in the region can be linked to the policies of Russia and China to a certain extent and have the potential to affect the motives of these two powers. Although Central Asia is rich in natural resources, it is landlocked and has lagged other nations in terms of agricultural production and industrial development. Although the Caucasus is divided into the North, the territory of Russia, and the South, where three independent states are located, it is insufficient in terms of production and development. The Caucasus stands out especially with energy projects and its feature of being a commercial corridor.

The Politics of Transition in Central Asia and the Caucasus

The Politics of Transition in Central Asia and the Caucasus PDF Author: Amanda E Wooden
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134207441
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
Most books on the Caucasus and Central Asia are country-by-country studies. This book, on the other hand, fills a gap in Central Eurasian studies as one of the few comparative case study books on Central Eurasia, covering both the Caucasus and Central Asia; it considers key themes right across the two regions highlighting both political change and continuity. Comparative case study chapters, written by regional experts from a variety of methodological backgrounds, provide historical context, and evaluate Soviet political legacies and emerging policy outcomes. Key topics include: the varied types and sources of authoritarianism; political opposition and protest politics; predetermined outcomes of post-Soviet economic choices; social and stability impacts of natural resource wealth; variations in educational reform; international norm influence on gender policy and the power of human rights activists. Overall, the book provides a thorough, up-to-date overview of what is increasingly becoming a significant area of concern.

The Long Game on the Silk Road

The Long Game on the Silk Road PDF Author: S. Frederick Starr
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1538114658
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 163

Book Description
This book argues that American and European policies toward Central Asia and the Caucasus suffer from both conceptual and structural impediments. It traces the framework of Western policies to the 1975 Helsinki Final Act, which resulted in the stovepiping of relations into political, economic, and democracy categories – and in often uncoordinated or contradictory policies. While the authors embrace the goal of promoting human rights and democracy, they argue that the antagonistic methods adopted to advance this goal have proven counter-productive. They propose that Western governments work with the regional states rather than on or against them; and that instead of focusing directly on political systems, policies should focus on developing the quality of governance and help build institutions that will be building blocks of rule of law and democracy in the long term. The authors also argue that Western leaders have largely failed to grasp the significance of this region, relegated it to a subordinate status and thus damaging western interests. The development of sovereign, economically strong, and effectively self-governing states in the Caucasus and Central Asia is an important goal in its own right; the book stresses the importance of a region where the development and preservation of secular statehood could become a model for the entire Muslim world.

The Central Caucasus

The Central Caucasus PDF Author: Ėlʹdar Ismailov
Publisher: Nova Science Publishers
ISBN: 9781604566062
Category : Caucasus
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
"The two authors show, with tables, figures, and theoretical insight, the economic paths of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia since independence, and their prospects for integration into the global economy. Reconceptualizing the Caucasian economic space, they show how the Caucasian economies are linked to one another, to regional powers and associations, and to the broader global markets in Europe, Asia and the United States. They investigate the prospects for a common Caucasian regional economic space and looking at the Caucasian economies since independence, remind us that no economy can be isolated, not even small and peripheral economies like those in Caucasia. They illustrate the critical role the region is beginning to play in global energy markets and as a transport hub between Asia and Europe. This is the first book in English to explore the geo-economics of Caucasia. The authors should be commended for bringing together such detailed analysis and information into one book."--BOOK JACKET.
