Book Description
"Dr. Campbell's awareness of the importance of the active roles which Pacific islanders played in the shaping of the histories of their own countries is evident throughout: he has examined, whenever he could, historical events and processes from the point of view and interests of the islanders concerned. No other work has done this, and that in itself makes Dr. Campbell's book an important contribution to Pacific history."--Dr. Malama Meleisea, Director of the Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies, University of Canterbury "Dr. Campbell's awareness of the importance of the active roles which Pacific islanders played in the shaping of the histories of their own countries is evident throughout: he has examined, whenever he could, historical events and processes from the point of view and interests of the islanders concerned. The Man Who Gave Away His Island

The Man Who Gave Away His Island PDF Author: Ray Perman
Publisher: Birlinn
ISBN: 0857900781
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 369

Book Description
In 1938 John Lorne Campbell bought the Hebridean isle of Canna. He wanted to prevent it becoming a rich man's playground (like so many other islands and Highland estates), to preserve a part of traditional Gaelic culture and show that efficient farming methods could be compatible with wildlife conservation and sustainability. But his determination to get the island left him burdened by debt, and even after he gave it to the National Trust for Scotland in 1981 he still had to fight to secure his legacy. This acclaimed book is an insightful and human portrait of one of the twentieth century's most significant scholars of the Gaelic world, and of his 60-year partnership with Margaret Fay Shaw, who together created the world-famous library of Gaelic song and other material at Canna House.

The Battle of Campbell's Island (Classic Reprint)

The Battle of Campbell's Island (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: William A. Meese
Publisher: Forgotten Books

Pages : 40

Book Description
Excerpt from The Battle of Campbell's Island Some years ago, when I first read an account of the engagement on July 19, 1814, between the Americans and Black Hawk's band at Campbell's Island, I became anxious to learn more of the particulars. I was disappointed in finding but slight if any mention of this affair in the histories of our country. 'one history of Illinois devotes a little over a page to this battle, and another about a page and a half. These are the most extended notices that this battle has ever received. Since reading my first account, I have from time to time found mention of this engagement, and in the following pages I present such information as I have secured. This sketch is not intended as an expression of opinion on the merits or demerits of any person connected wit-h this engagement; it is sim ply a compilation of facts, arranged and put together, so that any who may be interested in this event, can secure such information as I have been able to gather, without going to the trouble of consulting numer ous authorities, most of which are beyond the reach of the ordinary reader.
