The batteries of the advanced guard now also arrived in the rear of General Grossmaim's Infantry. The 5th, and soon afterwards the 1st 4-pounder battery, took up positions by the side of the south end of Chlum, on the road leading to Lipa. The enemy's columns, which still held their ground in front of Rosberitz, were so shaken by the Prussian Artillery and Infantry fire that they gave up their position and retreated into the village. About the same time a strong column of Infantry, apparently two battalions, advanced at the high-road as far as the Chlum-Langenhof road, but were met by the Fusilier Battalion of the 1st Regiment, and retreated to Rosberitz also. The moment had now come for a renewed attack on Rosberitz, and Lieut.-General Yon Grossmaun gave Major-Gencral Von Pape orders to carry it out. As the greater part of the advanced guard of the 1st Army, and the nearest detachments of the Guards, were descendingthe hill of Chlum preparatory to attacking Rosberitz, they saw beyond the high-road a considerable body of Cavalry coming up at a rapid pace from the direction of Sadowa. This was the head of the Cavalry of the 1st Army in pursuit of the enemy, led by Major-Gencral Count Groeben with the 12th Hussars. Up to this moment the action of the Vlth Prussian Corps" had progressed as follows: --Repeated attacks of the Austrian Haller Hussar Regiment attempted to disturb the formation of the 11th Division at Nedelist, but were repulsed by the volleys of the Infantry.
