California Sketches

California Sketches PDF Author: O. P. Fitzgerald

Pages : 214

Book Description
Excerpt from California Sketches: New and Old These Sketches wrote themselves, as it were. About three years ago my friend, Prof. Alonzo Phelps (formerly of Harvard University), in reply to my remark that somebody ought to preserve the vanishing phases of the early California life, said, "Yes, it ought to be done, and you are the man to do it." The matter was then dismissed from my mind as the flattering suggestion of a partial friend. After leaving California, every thing connected with my life, or that had come under my observation while there, assumed a fresh interest to my own mind. The remark of my friend was remembered, and, more to gratify a kindly impulse than with a view to make a volume, in snatches of such leisure as an editor gets, the penciling of these humble Sketches began. Now that the little book is finished, I am at least half sorry it was ever begun. Yet there has been a pleasure in writing it. The old days have come back to me again, and images that were fading have stood before me in the form and color of life. Ah! if I could make them stand thus before my kind readers! The Sketches are all from real life. In one or two instances names are disguised for obvious reasons. I have told the story as I saw it, and as I remember it. There is no fancy-sketch among these chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from California 46 to 88 T is usual for a bookmaker to present himself to his readers by something in way of preface. This might not be needed in the present case were it not that this writer deems it well to apologize for his boldness as an unlettered man, in trying to write a book at all, and also to crave that his frequent use of the first personal pronoun singular may not be set down to vanity, but rather to the fact of its being convenient for stating, briefly, matters personal to himself, and of his own memory and experience. To old Pioneers in the American settlement of California some parts of the following record may appear incorrect, and some may be too familiar or unimportant to be interesting but let each fact be taken as a link in a chain of a California life, and its value, though small, may be acknowledged. It has appeared to this writer that every fact relating to the early settlement of California should be recorded and treasured up in fact, that it is the duty of every Pioneer to put in writing his early California experience. Book Description
Excerpt from California The new series of Elementary School Geographies of which this volume forms a part has been worked out along lines entirely different from any other American text. The two-time-over plan has been abandoned for a progressive course in which each country is studied but once. The descriptive method in which the memory plays the chief role has been replaced by one in which reason and thought, based on experience, are the moving forces. The aim of this, the second book in the New Series, is twofold: first, is to give the child such a conception of his own state as will be of some real use to him in daily life; and second, to afford a foundation for an intelligent study of the world at large. When the child understands how people about him are influenced by their environment he has acquired the ability, with the aid of a good physical map, to form conclusions as to how people in distant lands are affected by their environments. This view leads us to look upon facts not as the aim but rather the tools by the aid of which true geographic understanding is reached. To accomplish this aim, a readjustment of emphasis is necessary. Instead of giving a few weeks here and there in the course to the home, state or natural region in which the child lives, and thus making the home region incidental to world geography, the method employed in the present series assumes that an understanding of the home is the indispensable prerequisite to a real knowledge of the world. Working the above out by means of the problem method, the study appears to the child to take on a definite purpose. It becomes intensely interesting and leaves a permanent impression. From the point of view outlined, no apology need be offered for putting within reach of the children of California this book, which is intended as a basis for a year's study. Such a study naturally falls in the fifth year and before formal world geography is commenced. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Bill's Mistake a Story of the California Redwoods It was a warm day in early June; one of those days when you just simply cannot stay in; a day that was never made for a school-room or for study; when a dip in the surf or a hike among the redwoods would be far more preferable than a drowsy school-room; a day that meant you must be out of doors. But it was all over, anyway-for a time, at least. The last bell was ringing. Vaca tion had begun for the students of the Santa Cruz High School. Groups of boys and girls came pouring out of the doors, laughing and chattering, with happy, smiling faces; only occasionally a long-drawn face appearing among them - no doubt that of some child who had failed to be promoted. But they were all glad to be free for a long two' months to come; all were glad to get out into the beautiful summer day.
