Beginning in March 2009, California expanded its prenatal screening program to Full Integrated Screening, which combines a first trimester blood test and fetal nuchal translucency measurement with second trimester quad marker screening. The screening program is now more complex which may make it more difficult to provide adequate information in a timely enough manner to allow pregnant women to make informed choices about participating in screening. Women should understand the complexities of the program before they participate. By evaluating the responses to a brief, anonymous questionnaire, this study assesses what participants in the California Prenatal Screening Program understand about First Trimester Screening. This study evaluates what participants know about key factors of the screening test, where they received information, and where they preferred to get their information about prenatal screening. The women who scored highest on the knowledge test had a college degree or higher and sought information outside of their doctor's office, such as from the Screening Program's pamphlet or the Internet. Most women (70%) had adequate knowledge (>50%) and a large proportion (35%) had a high amount (>80%) of knowledge about the screening test. Most participants (69%) received information about First Trimester Screening from their doctor and the vast majority (93%) preferred to get information from their doctor. The information from this study can be used to improve counseling of prenatal patients by having information presented in a manner that women prefer, which is most often from a healthcare professional (doctor (93%), nurse (35%), or genetic counselor (26%)).
