Book Description
Excerpt from The Calcutta Review, 1894, Vol. 98 Hether by reason of the excellence of his chroniclers, whose fidelity lets the fact have way - whether by the Irrepressible truth of _the fact itself, which vanquishes the doubt excited by a tolerance unusual even in our day, - ir is certain that acquaintance with the doings of Akbar deepens first im pressions of his sympathetic and tolerant appreciation of charac ter. In his dealings with the man whose name heads this bio graphical sketch, he shows singular consideration and patience for the vagaries of a nature little in harmony with his own. Muhammad Husain had in him a strong leaven of bigotry and must, from this alone, have been uncongenial to the ruler who to use Tennyson's satisfying words - saw, in the furious form alisms of erudite Moslims, The clash of tides that meet in narrow seas, Not the great Voice; not the true Deep. The latter was in his days, a noble of high repute, and chief of the Barukz e tribe. Ou his death, Taimur Shah, who then ruled in Afl'g anistan, bestowed with due regard to prime eniture, the dignity of the chiefship upon Rahimdad Khan, t e eldest of the four sons of the deceased Hadji. But this man had not the qualities necessary to control or conciliate his tribe. He was sordid and morose. He shut himself up in his house; seldom associated with his equals without offending them, or with his inferiors without injuring them. He wanted courtesy - he wanted hospitality; he had a bad temper and a bad heart. The Emma rose 11 against him and a pealed to the King. Book Description
Excerpt from The Calcutta Review, 1865, Vol. 41 Now - in whatever measure these divisions hold good with regard to mammals, we cannot but help thinking that they are decidedly arbitrary with regard to birds. Our Opinion is this -that as the flora of a place is dependent on the tempera ture, and the insects dependent on the flora, so the birds, by being to a great extent dependent on insect food, are to be found to range according to the vegetation. In the low valleys of the Himalayas, where heat and moisture combine to form a very tropical vegetation, we find the very finest forms Of insects are developed, and those birds frequenting the same region are generally nearly allied, as well as the insects, to the tropical forms found further south in the Islands of the Indian Archipelago, where the vegetation is Of much the same character. The higher up the mountain sides we go, we find the birds and insects vary according to the zones of vegetation.
